Hydrologic Functions
The 1987 Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation manual requires
inundation, flooding, or saturation to the surface for at least 5 % to 12.5 % of
the growing season to satisfy the hydrology requirements for jurisdictional
wetlands (COE, 1987). In western Washington, wetland hydrology is
typically present between the months of December and May. The growing
season can either be defined by the number of frost -free days (temperatures
above 28°f), or the period during which the soil temperature at a depth of
19.7 inches is above biological zero (41 °F).
Wetland hydrology will be provided in the emergent zone by the controlled
water level maintained in the pond and roof drain run off. A persistent water
table will be present in the emergent zone. Water will be directed from roof
drains into the dispersion trench supplementing the wetland hydrology. A
dispersion trench will be located at the break in slope between the buffer and
forested wetland (see detail). Surface flow will collect at the break creating
saturation to the soil surface for the duration required for jurisdictional
wetlands.
