THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED:
Associated Earth Sciences Inc. (AESI) was on-site in the afternoon for observation of capillary break, water line backfill and storm line
backfill, at the request of Jerry Jr. of CDC. Upon arrival, AESI met with Jerry Jr. of CDC.
Capillary Break Observation – Areas A & B
A section of capillary break was completed in Areas A and B today as noted in Figures 1 & 2 below. The capillary break consisted of
4” of clean (no fines) 5/8” crushed chip rock. In our opinion, capillary break completed today in the noted areas appeared consistent
with project plans and our recommendations.
On-site Water Line Backfill – NW corner
While on-site, AESI observed a small section of water line backfill in the NW corner of the site, as noted in Figure 3 below. The area
was backfilled with 2” minus crushed rock and compacted with a hoepac. AESI used a ½ diameter steel soils T-probe to observe the
area. Generally, the area probed less than 2” under full body weight. In our opinion, based on our observations we found the
observed area of water line backfill to be firm and unyielding and suitable for planned paving.
On-site Storm Line Backfill
While on-site, we observed that approximately 4’ of storm line backfill, consisting of on-site soils, had been placed starting from
Catch Basin #11 and ending near #1 (Figure 3). The backfill was placed in 1’ to 1.5’ lifts and compacted with a hoepac and vibratory
roller. AESI used a density gauge to test the new backfilled sections. The small area between CB #4 and CB #5 we had noted
previously, still appeared to be yielding and test results were below 92% compaction and over optimum moisture content. As
discussed on a previous visit, Jerry Jr. plans to address the yielding section when they complete the water main. In the rest of the
completed backfill, test results met or exceeded 95% compaction (Table 1). In our opinion, based on our observations and test
results, we found the rest of the observed area of the storm line backfill, to be firm and unyielding and suitable for planned paving.
