Introduction of Guests: The Design team hired by the City of Renton Public Works division led a discussion around the design of the future Renton Connector project, an important Downtown project that was identified in the 2019 Downtown Renton Civic Core Vision and Action Plan. This project will develop more detailed designs for the Burnett Avenue S Corridor between S 2nd Street and S 5th Street that incorporates dedicated bicycle and pedestrian facilities, changes to vehicle movements and parking, and updates to landscaping and the streetscape environment. The scope of this project includes two major tasks: 1. developing a street concept plan for the full public right of way along these three blocks, and 2) developing final engineering drawings to retrofit the existing street and install continuous bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The design team and staff from Public Works approached the Arts Commission early in the project phases before design begins to understand what information Commissioners think will be important for the team to consider with regards to art as the street concept plan design begins this Fall. Art has been identified as key element in the plan. There are opportunities for Art to “overlay” the project including: A historical overlay (featuring transportation history along the park) Interactive art installations “Element of discovery & surprise” The team views art as opportunity to create an identity for the “Connector” project. The Commissioners had an opportunity to weigh in with ideas for preparing the project for the inclusion of art. The team assured the Commission they would continue to reach out as the project progressed with updates and additional opportunities to provide feedback.
