Remarks: RE: Horizontal Directional Drilling Procedures SET-UP: The drill machine, mud truck, tool truck, and vacuum trailer will be mobilized to the site. POTHOLING EXISTING UTILITIES: All existing utilities in the bore path will be potholed to determine their location and depth. This is accomplished by using a vacuum trailer to excavate to find the utility. After determining the depths of existing utilities, a safe bore path will be planned. DRILLING PROCEDURES: Once the machine is set up, the drill head is calibrated, and the mud supply is hooked up. Directly in front of the machine, a small receiving pit (3’ deep X 5’ long X 3’ wide) is dug. As the drilling progresses, a mixture of bentonite clay will be pumped into the bore hole. Along the way the depth and pitches of the drill head are monitored and recorded. The drilling will then proceed to the exit point. Once the pilot bore is constructed, the pull back process will begin. The exit pit will be 3’ deep X 5’ long X 3’ wide to “feed” the pipe as the drill pulls it back toward the machine. The fluid used in the drilling process is then vacuumed into a trailer and hauled to a dump site. TRACKING EQUIPMENT: In order to accurately monitor slope and depth, a transmitter capable of reading percent grade and depth is used. These are of the walk-over variety; the person locating the drill head receives information while walking over the drill head’s location along the path. The locating system can also be set up at a fixed location allowing the drill head to steer to the locating box if walking along the bore path is not allowed. PIPE PULL: After drilling the pilot hole, the drill head will be removed, and a swivel/reamer attached in order to pull back the product pipe. As the drill rods are pulled back and removed, the pipe is pulled into the bore hole. When the pipe is completely pulled in, the pull head is removed from the pipe and the pipe is ready for tie-in.
