HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/05/2023 - Minutes RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, April 5 2023 – 7:00 pm Renton City Hall – Conferencing Room (726) or via Zoom Members Present: Amelia Ossorio, Brianna Burroughs, Evelyn Reingold, Kaie Wise, Marvin Rosete, Susan Jessick Staff Present: Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Staff liaison Guests Present: Monica Tolas from the Interurban Center for the Arts Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Susan Jessick at 7:00pm. Introduction of Guests: Monica Tolas from the Interurban Center for the Arts (ICA) gave a presentation on a community partnership run through Green River Community College. The program involves 33-35 member schools from 8 districts and provides elementary school art education. The program trains volunteers to be docents through monthly workshops, and no prior experience is required. Docents receive educational and ethnically diverse materials. The program currently has 600 parent volunteers. The cost to each school is a $250 membership fee per school. Maplewood Heights and Talbot Elementary has participated in the program previously. The request to the Commission is for assistance facilitating connections with the Renton Elementary schools. The goal of the ICA is to have commitments from Renton schools before the end of the school year to determine plans for the 2023/2024 school year. Correspondence & Announcements: • Bruce McIntyre has resigned from the Arts Commission effective immediately. • Arts & Culture Master Plan Update RFP – the request for proposals to update the 2010 Renton Arts & Culture Master plan was released on March 29. The deadline to submit a proposal for consideration is April 27, 2023. • Main Street Entrepreneur Workshop & Pitch Competition. Save the date for the Final Pitch presentation on April 18 at the Renton Civic Theatre at 5:30pm. Approval of Minutes: A motion was made and carried to approve the minutes from the March meeting. MSC (Kaie/Evelyn) Budget Update: The remaining budget in the Arts & Culture project account is $15,209.89. $11,000 Sustained Support award from 4 Culture (to support the grant program) $15,000 (Capital Art Project – potential use for Williams Streetscape art project or a Renton Connector project) Promotions Committee update: Bri reported that the dragon scavenger hunt in honor of Erasmus' 4th year in Renton currently has 328 participants. The event led to a significant spike in page views and visits. On April 1st, their Facebook page received 357 page visits (up 371.5%), 4 new likes (up 200%), and a page reach of 1,910. Their Instagram page had 194 profile visits (up 793%), 13 new followers (up 683%), and a reach of 356. Roadshow Committee update: it was reported that the full line-up for upcoming events was shared along with the agenda. The Promotions Committee has successfully scheduled musicians for the Farmers Market, neighborhood picnics, and summer concerts. The roadshow program has been asked to support the stage on Friday of Renton River Days (July 21). Dave has requested assistance with sound support for the spring/summer lineup, and he is willing to provide training to anyone who can help. Grants Committee update: Evelyn reported that they held a grant workshop at Highlands Library on March 21, which had a total of 9 attendees. The next deadline for grant applications is April 21. Old Business: AEP 6 Study Update - an update was given on the AEP schedule and upcoming events. Surveys for the AEP are due by May 31, and volunteers are needed for various events. A schedule of upcoming events will be sent out along with the request to assist with surveying. Surveys were sent to 38 organizations in Renton, and the initial due date was on Friday. So far, only five organizations, including RMAC, have completed the surveys, and one has partially completed it. Personal outreach to these organizations is needed to request them to complete the survey. The Commission is looking for volunteers to assist with this outreach effort. New Business: Proposed Mural (711 S 4th St) – The property owner at 711 S 4th Street submitted a design proposal for a mural installation on the west-facing brick wall of the building. The artist is Craig Cundiff, a resident of South Seattle. The design was reviewed and approved by the Commission for installation as proposed.
