Our services do not include supervision or direction of the contractor, their employees, or agents. Geotechnical recommendations for obtaining project objectives may be made by our representatives; however, direction of the actual work should come from the owner or contractor, as appropriate. The contractor is responsible for complying with the contract documents at all times, regardless of the presence of our field representative. Jobsite safety, including compliance with all applicable state or federal regulations, is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The observations, recommendations, and conclusions provided in this field report are preliminary until reviewed by the ESNW project manager. ESNW rep was onsite to observe and document passive sheer pile installation. Passive Shear Pile Installation ESNW rep observed the contractor excavating the northwest corner of the site, for proposed stormwater vault. Rep observed the contractor excavating into native brown inter bedded sand with gravel, and silt as-depth. ESNW rep observed the eastern and southern edges of the excavation to have an exposed height of approximately 20 feet cut to a temporary 1H:1V slope inclination. The west side of the excavation was observed to have exposed overall heights ranging between approximately 7 to 10 feet (or less). The north portion of the excavation was observed to have exposed overall heights ranging between approximately 10 feet at the west and 20 feet to the east (see photo attached). Tension cracking was identified above the east/SE portion of the excavation. The tension cracks were reported to GBI PM. ESNW recommended using passive shear piles to stabilize the slope. The passive shear piles were drilled along the SE facing slope, to varied depths between 25 and 40 feet in depth. The drilling contractor used a 24” auger to drill for piles 4’ apart. The vertical shafts were then filled with 4000psi grout, and the W8’ x 31 structural beams were placed into the shaft. These piles were designed to intercept the failure plane of the slope. ESNW rep observed grey/blue clay being excavated from the shafts at all depths excavated. The clay was observed to be drier deeper in the excavation. ESNW rep will return tomorrow to observe the continuation of the soldier pile excavation.
