GENERAL NOTES : WAT E R
1. All Work materials shall be in conformance with the standards and
specifications of the City of Renton Utility Department and the latest
edition of the WSDOT/APWA Standards and Specifications. A set of approved
plans shall be kept on site at all times during construction.
2. The hours of work in the street right-of-way shall be limited to 8:30 AM to
3:30 PM on weekdays unless otherwise approved in writing by the Department
of Public Works at 235-2635. All street closures, partial or full, shall
be approved by the Department of Public Works 24 hours in advance. The
Police Department, Fire Department, and 911 shall be notified 24 hours in
advance.
3. All locations of existing utilities shown are approximate and it shall be
the contractor's responsibility to verify the true and correct location so
as to avoid damage or disturbance. For utility locate call 48-Hour
Locators, 1-800-424-5555.
4. All water main pipe to be cement lined ductile iron pipe conforming to APWA
C110 and C111 or latest revision, thickness Class 52. Cement mortar lining
and seal coating shall conform to AWWA C104 or latest revision. Pipe joints
to be push -on or mechanical joint. Betiding to be class C. All ductile
iron pipe installed South of Sunset Blvd. (Empire Way, SR 900) and West of
SR 167 (East Valley Freeway) or in soils of high resistivity shall be
polyethylene wrapped per ANSI/AWWA C105-77 Standards.
5. Cast iron and ductile iron fittings shall be cement lined, pressure rated
as noted on plans, and in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10-82. Cement
lining shall be in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C104-A21.4-85. If fittings
are 3 inches to 12 inches in diameter and have mechanical joints, the
fittings shall be in accordance with either ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10-82 or
ANST/AWWA C153/A21.53-84. 3-inch to 12-inch diameter fittings which have
mechanical joints and/or flagged faints shall be in accordance with
ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10.82 or a combination of ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10.82 and
ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53-84 such that the portion of the fitting with a
mechanical joint(s), may be in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53-84 and
that portion of the fitting with flanged joints(s) shall be in accordance
with ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53-84 and that portion of the fitting with flanged
joints(s) shall be in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10-82. Acceptance
testing in accordance with section 53-5.3 of ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53-84 or
with section 10-4.3 of ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10-82 shall be obtained by the
contractor and transmitted to the owner.
6. Gate valves shall conform to AWWA C500 and shall be iron body,
bronzed -mounted, double disc with bronze wedging device and 0-ring stuffing
box. Valves shall be designed for a minimum water operating pressure of
200 PSI. Gate valves shall be Clow List 14, Mueller Company NO. A2380, or
M&II. All valves 12" in diameter and larger, shall be installed in a vault.

7. Fire hydrants shall be Corey type (opening with the pressure) conforming to
AWWA C-504-80 with a 6 inch inlet and a M.V.O. of 5 inches, two 2 112 inch
hose nozzls with national standard 7 inch, 60 degrees V. threads, O.D.
thread 4.875 and root diameter 4-6263, 1-1/4" pentagon operating nut opened
by turning counterclockwise (left).
8. All water main 10 inches and smaller to maintain a minimum cover of 36
inches below finish grade. All water main 12 inches and larger shall be at
a minimum of 48 inches below finish grade. Where utility conflicts occur,
water mains are to be lowered to clear.
9. All water mains shall be pressure tested and disinfected in accordance with
the specificaions of the City of Renton and the Washington State Health
Department. All pressure testing shall be done in the presence of a
representative of the City of Renton.
10. A preconstruction conference is required prior to any construction. A
minimum of 3 (three) working days notice is required for scheduling. Prior
to scheduling the precon a permit information sheet must be supplied to
the Utility Engineer's Office. Twenty-four hour notice will be requried
prior to starting new construction.
11. It shall be the contracotr's responsibility to secure all necessary
permits prior to starting construction.
12. Installation of corporate stops, water services, lines and meters shall not
be done until all service agreements, meter applications, construction
permits, and payment of fees have been made to the City of Renton.
13. All connection to existing mains to be accomplished by the City of Renton,
except wet taps which may be made by approved wet tap contractors with
prior approval from the Department of Public Works. All necessary
excavation and materials to be supplied by the contractor and be on -site
prior to City notifications.
14. Inspection will be accomplished by a representative of the City of Renton.
It shall be the contractor's responsibility to notify the Utility
Department 24 hours in advance of backfilling all construction. The
contractor as well as the Engineers shall keep asbuilt drawings.
15. Contractor to provide plugs and temporary blow -off assemblies for testing
and purity acceptance prior to final tie-in.
16. All joint restraint systems (shackle rods, nuts, bolts, etc.) shall be as
:nunufactured by the Star Manufacturing Company of Columbus Ohio or equal
approved in writing by the Department of Public Works.
17. Asphalt and concrete street paving shall be sawcut to a munimum depth of
two inches. Oil mat streets may be spade cut. All surface concrete,
pavement, sidewalks, curb, gutte.-s, and driveway approaches shall be sawcut
to a minimum depth of two inches or removed to an existing expansion
joint.
18. A temporary cold mix asphalt patch shall be placed on the day of inital
excavation with a permanent, sealed patch to be placed, to City of Renton
policy, within ten days. Call for subgrade inspection prior to placement
of final patch. Trenches will not be left open ov^r night without prior
written approval of the Inspector.
19. For City projects such as telemetry conduit, the PVC pipe used shall be
schedule 40 in unimproved areas and schedule 80 under improved areas. All
chemical process lines shall be schedule 80 PVC pipe.
SANITARY SEWER NOTES
1. ALL WORK AND MATERIALS SHALL BE IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE STANDARDS AND
SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CITY OF RENTON AND A.P.W.A. STANDARDS AND
SPECIFICATIONS (LATEST EDITION).
2. ALL LOCATIONS OF EXISTING UTILITIES SHOWN ARE APPROXIMATE AND IT SHALL BE
THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO VERIFY THE TRUE AND CORRECT LOCATION
SO AS TO AVOID DAMAGE OR DISTURBANCE.
3. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY LOCATIONS AND DEPTHS OF EXISTING UTILITIES
BEFORE DISTURBING.
4. ALL CONSTRUCTION IS SUBJECT TO THE INSPECTION BY THE CITY OF RENTON AND
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY THE CITY OF HIS SCHEDULE IN SUFFICIENT TIME TO
PERMIT INSPECTION PRIOR TO AND DURING THE WORK.
5. PRIOR TO BEGINNING WORK, ARRANGEMENTS SHALL BE MADE WITH THE CITY OF RENTON
FOR A PRE -CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE TO BE ATTENDED BY THE CONTRACTOR, CITY
OF RENTON AND OTHER REPRESENTATIVES OR INTERESTED UTILITIES.
6. SIDE SEWERS ARE TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF CITY OF
RENTON, 6" DIAMETER MINIMUM.
7. ALL MANHOLES NOT IN PAVED PUBLIC R/W SHALL HAVE LOCKING LIDS.
8. ALL GRAVITY SANITARY SEWER PIPE (EXCEPT AS NOTED) SHALL BE INTEGRAL WALL,
BELL AND SPIGOT, RUBBER GASKET JOINTS, UN-PLASTIZED POLYVINYL CHLORIDE
MEETING A.S.T.M. D-3034 (LATEST REVISION). ALL SANITARY SEWER FORCE MAIN
SHALL BE POLYVINYL CHLORIDE PIPE CONFORMING TO A.W.W.A. C900 WITH RUBBER
RING AND THICKENED BELL PIPE JOINTS CONFORMING TO A.S.T.M. F-477.
9. BEDDING FOR ALL SEWER PIPE SHALL BE PEA GRAVEL, MINIMUM 6" OVER AND UNDER
PIPE.
10. MANHOLES SHALL BE STANDARD PLAN NUMBER 34 WITH ECCENTRIC CONES AND SINGLE
1" LIFT HOLE IN COVER.
11. ALL TRENCHES SHALL BE COMPACTED PRIOR TO TESTING SEWER LINES FOR
ACCEPTANCE .
12. NEW CONNECTIONS TO EXISTING MANHOLES/SEWERS SHALL BE SEALED OFF UNTIL
UPSTREAM CONSTRUCTION IS FINISHED, TESTED, CLEANED AND ACCEPTED ALL
CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS AND WATER SHALL BE REMOVED PRIOR TO OPENING SEAL.
13. IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO SECURE ALL NECESSARY
PERMITS PRIOR TO STARTING CONSTRUCTION.
14. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL KEEP AN ACCURATE ACCOUNT OF ALL SEWER CONSTRUCTION
INCLUDING AN ACCURATE "AS BUILT" SET OF CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS. "AS BUILT
DRAWINGS" SHALL BE CERTIFIED TO THE OWNER OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE AFTER
COMPLETION OF THE WORK AND BEFORE FINAL PAYMENT FOR THE WORK.
15. ALL SEWER MAIN CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE TESTED USING THE LOW AIR PRESSURE AIR
TEST METHOD AND SHALL BE T.V. INSPECTED PRIOR TO FINAL ACCEPTANCE.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY
FOR WORK IN STREET RIGHT-OF-WAY
All necessary permits and bonds must be issued prior to beginning work.
When crossing a city utility (watermain, storm drain, sanitary sewer) the
utility which is crossing will be cased in steel, P.V.C. schedule 80 heavy, or
P.V.C. encased in concrete one foot on all side.
All surface concrete, pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveway
approaches shall be sawcut to a minimum depth of two inches or removed to an
existing expansion joint.
Backfill material shall be compacted to 95% maximum dry density. Questionable
material shall be tested by a certified materials testing lab at the contractors
expense. Unsuitable material shall removed from the site.
A temporary cold mix asphalt patch shall be placed on the day of initial
excavation with a permanent, sealed patch to be placed to City of Renton
specifications within ten days. Call for subgrade inspection prior to
placement of final patch.
Approved plan shall be on site at all times during construction.
Traffic control shall be in accordance with U.M.T.C.D. Part VI - Contact
Traffic Engineering 235-2620.
All street closures, partial or full, shall be approved by the Traffic
Engineer 24 hours in advance.
City of Renton shall be notified 24 hours in advance of any work at 235-2615 and
235-2631. Also notify Valley Comm. Center at 911 24 hours in advance of work
(Police and Fire Departments).

to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays only unless otherwise approved in writing by the
Engineering Supervisor at 235-2635.
Trenches will not be left open over night without prior written approval of the
Inspector.
Job sites are to be kept in a clean and orderly manner at all times. Sweeping,
flushing, and other means shall be used to comply with this requirement.
All existing concrete structures will be core drilled unless manufactured
knock -outs are provided.
STORM DRAINAGE NOTES
1. ALL WORK AND MATERIALS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH A,P. W.Q. STD S.
SPECIFICATIONS CURRENT EDITION AND CITY OF RENTON REGULATIONS AND
REQUIREMENTS AND SUBJECT TO APPROVAL AND INSPECTION BY CITY OF RENTON.
2. LOCATIONS OF EXISTING UTILITIES ARE APPROXIMATE. IT SHALL BE THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO VERIFY THE EXACT LOCATIONS SO AS TO
AVOID DAMAGE.
3. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY EACH UTILITY AND COORDINATE HIS WORK SCHEDULE
WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF POWER, TELEPHONE, GAS AND CABLE T.V. FACILITES.
4. ALL STORM SEWER PIPE SHALL BE C.M.P. 16 GAGE, CONCRETE PIPE OR AS NOTED ON
PLANS. ALL STEEL PIPE SHALL HAVE TREATMENT I OR BETTER. GASKETS ARE
REQUIRED FOR ALL STORM SEWER PIPE. ALL STEEL PIPE TO EE GALYANIiEV.
S. ALL PIPE BEDDING SHALL BE TYPE 'F' STANDARD PLAN NUMBER 62. ALL
PIPE/TRENCH BACKFILL SHALL BE COMPACTED TO A MINIMUM OF 95% OF MAXIMUM
RELATIVE DENSITY AS MEASURED BY SAND CONE METHOD ASTM D 1556.
6. ALL CATCH BASINS SHALL CONFORM TO THE APWA STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATION AND
THE STANDARDS FOR THE CITY OF RENTON SPECIFICATIONS.
7. CATCH BASIN/INLETS FRAMES AND GRATES SHALL BE ADJUSTED TO FINISH GRADE
JUST PRIOR TO POURING CURB AND GUTTER AND PAVING.
8. CEMENT CONCRETE CURB AND GUTTER SHALL CONFORM TO TYPE A CURB AND GUTTER.
9. ALL MONUMENTS SHALL BE CEMENT CONCRETE WITH COPPER WIRE OR TACK, MARKER
FRAME AND COVER SHALL CONFORM TO RENTON STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR
ROADWAY MONUMENTS.
10. ALL BUILDING DOWNSPOUTS AND FOOTING DRAINS SHALL BE CONNECTED TO THE STORM
DRAINAGE SYSTEM UNLESS OTHERWISE APPROVED BY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS.
11. PRIOR TO ANY CONSTRUCTION/DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY THE CITY OF RENTON
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS MUST BE CONTACTED AND A PRE -CONSTRUCTION
MEETING HELD.
12. ROCKERY WALLS SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED OF SOUND DURABLE ROCKS USING 2 TO 3 MAN
ROCKS. SOURCE OF MATERIAL TO BE APPROVED BY CITY.
13. ALL HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL LAYOUT AND CONTROL SHALL BE DONE BY A LICENSED
LAND SURVEYOR.
14. AS -BUILT PLANS AND RECORDS SHALL BE FURNISHED BY THE CONTRACTOR SHOWING ALL
DEVIATIONS FROM THE APPROVED PLANS.
15. IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO SECURE ALL NECESSARY
PERMITS PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION.
16. ALL CATCH BASIN GRATES SHALL BE VANED.
