CITY OF RENTON
WATER UTILITY - GENERAL NOTES
1. ALL WORK MATERIALS SHALL BE IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE STANDARDS AND
SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CITY OF RENTON UTILITY DEPARTMENT AND THE LATEST EDITION
OF THE WSDOT/APWA STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS, AS APPROVED BY THE CITY OF
RENTON. A SET OF APPROVED PLANS SHALL BE KEPT ON SITE AT ALL TIMES DURING
CONSTRUCTION.
2. THE HOURS OF WORK IN THE STREET RIGHT-OF-WAY SHALL BE LIMITED TO 8:30 AM TO 3:30
PM ON WEEKDAYS UNLESS OTHERWISE APPROVED IN WRITING BY THE DEPARTMENT OF
PUBLIC WORKS AT 235-2635. ALL STREET CLOSURES, PARTIAL OR FULL, SHALL BE
APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE. THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT, FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND 911 SHALL BE NOTIFIED 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE.
3. ALL LOCATIONS OF EXISTING UTILITIES SHOWN ARE APPROXIMATE AND IT SHALL BE THE
CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO VERIFY THE TRUE AND CORRECT LOCATION SO AS TO

OF 48 INCHES BELOW FINISH GRADE. WHERE UTILITY CONFLICTS OCCUR, WATER MAINS ARE
TO BE LOWERED TO CLEAR.
9. ALL WATER MAINS SI

CLEANING "PIGS" PRIOR TO DISINFECTION. THE "POLY PIGS" SHALL BE GIRARD INDUSTRIES
AQUA SWAB -AS OR APPROVED EQUAL .2 LB/CU FT. DENSITY FOAM WITH 90A DUROMETER
URETHANE RUBBER COATING ON THE REAR OF "PIG" ONLY. "PIGS" SHALL BE CYLINDER
SHAPED WITH BULLET NOSE OR SQUARE END. THE CITY WILL ASSIST THE CONTRACTOR
WHO WILL PERFORM THE CLEANING OPERATION.
9A ALL WATER MAINS AND SERVICES
SHALL BE PRESSURE TESTED TO A MINIMUM OF 200 PSI
OR 150 PSI OVER OPERATING PRESSURE, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE
CITY OF RENTON AND THE WASHINGTON STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT. ALL PRESSURE
TESTING SHALL BE DONE IN THE PRESENCE OF A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CITY OF RENTON.
9B. ALL WATER MAINS AND SERVICES SHALL BE DISINFECTED BY THE INJECTION OF A 50 PPM
(MINIMUM CONCENTRATION) CHLORINE/WATER SOLUTION. DRY CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE
SHALL NOT BE PLACED IN THE PIPE AS LAID. CHLORINE SHALL BE METERED/INJECTED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 7-11.3(12)E OR 7-11.3(12)F OF THE STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS
REFERENCED IN 1 ABOVE.
10. A PRECONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE IS REQUIRED PRIOR TO ANY CONSTRUCTION. A
MINIMUM OF 3 (THREE) WORKING DAYS NOTICE IS REQUIRED FOR SCHEDULING. PRIOR TO
SCHEDULING THE PRECONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE, A PERMIT INFORMATION SHEET MUST
BE SUPPLIED TO THE UTILITY ENGINEER'S OFFICE. TWENTY-FOUR HOUR NOTICE WILL BE
REQUIRED PRIOR TO STARTING NEW CONSTRUCTION.
11. IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO SECURE ALL NECESSARY PERMITS
PRIOR TO STARTING CONSTRUCTION.
12. INSTALLATION OF CORPORATE STOPS, WATER SERVICES, LINES AND METERS SHALL NOT BE
DONE UNTIL ALL SERVICE AGREEMENTS, METER APPLICATIONS, CONSTRUCTION PERMITS,
AND PAYMENT OF FEES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE CITY OF RENTON.
13. ALL CONNECTION TO EXISTING MAINS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED BY THE CITY OF RENTON,
EXCEPT WET TAPS WHICH MAY BE MADE BY APPROVED WET TAP CONTRACTORS WITH
PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS. ALL NECESSARY
EXCAVATION AND MATERIALS TO BE SUPPLIED BY THE CONTRACTOR AND BE ON -SITE PRIOR
TO CITY NOTIFICATIONS.
14. INSPECTION WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CITY OF RENTON. IT
SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY THE UTILITY DEPARTMENT 24
HOURS IN ADVANCE OF BACKFILLING ALL CONSTRUCTION. THE CONTRACTOR AS WELL AS
THE ENGINEERS SHALL KEEP AS -BUILT DRAWINGS.
?15. CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE PLUGS AND TEMPORARY BLOW -OFF ASSEMBLIES FOR TESTING
AND PURITY ACCEPTANCE PRIOR TO FINAL TIE-IN.
16. ALL JOINT RESTRAINT SYSTEMS (SHACKLE, RODS, NUTS, BOLTS, ETC.) SHALL BE AS
MANUFACTURED BY THE STAR MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF COLUMBUS, OHIO OR EQUAL
APPROVED IN WRITING BY THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS.
17. ASPHALT AND CONCRETE STREET PAVING SHALL BE SAW CUT TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF
TWO INCHES. OIL MAT STREETS MAY BE SPADE CUT. ALL SURFACE CONCRETE, PAVEMENT,
SIDEWALKS, CURB, GUTTERS, AND DRIVEWAY APPROACHES SHALL BE SAW CUT TO A
MINIMUM DEPTH OF TWO INCHES OR REMOVED TO AN EXISTING EXPANSION JOINT.
18. A TEMPORARY COLD MIX ASPHALT PATCH SHALL BE PLACED ON THE DAY OF INITIAL
EXCAVATION WITH A PERMANENT SEALED PATCH TO BE PLACED, TO CITY OF RENTON
POLICY, WITHIN TEN DAYS. CALL FOR SUBGRADE INSPECTION PRIOR TO PLACEMENT OF
FINAL PATCH. TRENCHES WILL NOT BE LEFT OPEN OVER NIGHT WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN
APPROVAL OF THE INSPECTOR.
19. FOR CITY PROJECTS SUCH A TELEMETRY CONDUIT, THE PVC PIPE USED SHALL BE
SCHEDULE 40 IN UNIMPROVED AREAS AND SCHEDULE 80 UNDER IMPROVED AREAS. ALL
CHEMICAL PROCESS LINES SHALL BE SCHEDULED 80 PVC PIPE.
KEYSTONE WALL NOTES CONSTRUCTION NOTES AND DETAILS
1.0 MATERIALS
1.1 FILL SOILS
1.1.1 FILL CONTAINING BRUSH, SOD, PEAT, ROOTS OR OTHER ORGANIC, PERISHABLE
OR DELETERIOUS MATTER, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO SNOW, ICE OR
FROZEN SOILS, SHALL BE CONSIDERED UNSUITABLE MATERIAL AND SHALL BE
REPLACED.
1.1.2 SOIL FILL MATERIAL SHALL BE IMPORTED SOILS WITH PARAMETERS DETERMINED
BY SOILS AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS DESIGN.
1.1.3 MATERIAL PASSING THE NO. 200 SIEVE SHALL NOT HAVE A LIQUID LIMIT
GREATER THAN 30 NOR A PLASTICITY INDEX GREATER THAN 20 UNLESS WRITTEN
CONSENT IS OBTAINED FROM THE ENGINEER OF RECORDS PRIOR TO PLACEMENT.
1.1.4 FILL FOR UNITS SHALL BE FREE DRAINING GRAVEL OR CRUSHED ROCK.
1.2 GEOGRID REINFORCING SHALL BE TENSAR UNIAXIAL GEOGRID UX 1500
MANUFACTURED BY THE TENSAR CORPORATION MORROW, GEORGIA.
1.3 FACING UNITS SHALL BE KEYSTONE STANDARD BLOCK UNITS.
1.3.1 INSTALLATION OF KEYSTONE FACING UNITS SHALL BE INSTALLED PER
MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATIONS, KEYSTONE RETAINING WALL SYSTEMS,
INC. MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.
1.4 ALL KEYSTONE GRAVITY WALLS OVER 4' IN HEIGHT REQUIRE DESIGN BY
GEOTECHNICAL AND/OR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER.
2.0 CONSTRUCTION METHODS
2.1 ALL CONSTRUCTION SHALL CONFORM WITH THE UNIFORM BUILDING CODE AND
APPLICABLE JURISDICTIONAL STANDARDS.
2.2 PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION OF A KEYSTONE/TENSAR REINFORCED SOIL
RETAINING WALL, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL CLEAR AND GRUB THE FILL ZONE
AREA, REMOVING TOP SOILS, BRUSH, SOD OR OTHER ORGANIC OR DELETERIOUS
MATERIALS. ANY SOFT AREA SHALL BE OVER -EXCAVATED AND REPLACED PRIOR
TO PLACING ADDITIONAL FILL SOILS.
2.3 FILL SHALL BE PLACED IN HORIZONTAL LIFTS NOT EXCEEDING 10 INCHES IN
UNCOMPACTED THICKNESS FOR HEAVY COMPACTION EQUIPMENT. FOR ZONES
WHERE COMPACTION IS ACCOMPLISHED WITH HAND OPERATED EQUIPMENT, FILL
SHALL BE PLACED IN HORIZONTAL LIFTS NOT EXCEEDING 6 INCHES IN
UNCOMPACTED THICKNESS (SEE NOTE 2.8).
2.4 FILL SHALL BE COMPACTED AS SPECIFIED BY PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS OR TO A
MINIMUM 95 PERCENT OF THE MAXIMUM DENSITY DETERMINED IN ACCORDANCE
WITH ASTM D-698 (STANDARD PROCTOR DENSITY), WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
2.5 TESTING METHODS AND FREQUENCY, AND VERIFICATION OF MATERIAL
SPECIFICATIONS AND COMPACTION SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE
CONTRACTOR.
2.6 WHERE LARGE ROCK, STONE OR OTHER ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS ARE USED IN
THE REINFORCED BACKFILL ZONE, THEY SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED TO NEST, BUT
SHALL BE DISTRIBUTED OVER THE AREA TO AVOID POCKETS. VOIDE SHALL BE
FILLED WITH SMALL STONES OR OTHER ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS.
2.7 CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE PERIODICALLY SUPERVISED BY THE SOILS ENGINEER.
2.8 ONLY HAND OPERATED COMPACTION EQUIPMENT SHALL BE USED WITHIN 3 FEET
OF THE WALL FACING UNITS.
2.9 BACKFILL SHALL BE GRADED AWAY FROM THE WALL FACE AND ROLLED AT THE
END OF EACH WORK DAY TO PREVENT PONDING OF WATER ON SURFACE OF THE
REINFORCED SOIL MASS.
3.0 TENSAR GEOGRID PLACEMENT
3.1 TENSAR GEOGRID SHALL BE PLACED AT THE LOCATION AND ELEVATIONS SHOWN
ON THE PLANS.
3.2 TENSAR GEOGRID LENGTH SHALL BE AS LISTED FOR EACH RESPECTIVE WALL
SECTION. REINFORCED FILL ZONE LENGTH IS AS MEASURED FROM THE FRONT
FACE OF THE KEYSTONE UNIT FACE.
3.3 TENSAR GEOGRIDS SHALL BE ATTACHED FIRMLY BETWEEN THE KEYSTONE BLOCK
SECTIONS OVER THE TWO FIBERGLASS CONNECTING PINS.
3.4 PRIOR TO PLACING FILL, THE GEOGRID MATERIALS SHALL BE PRE TENSIONED TO
90 PERCENT OF TENSILE CAPACITY PER TENSAR CORPORATIONS, MORROW,
GEORGIA, PROCEDURES (SEE NOTE 3.7).
3.5 FILL MATERIALS SHALL BE PLACED FROM THE BACK FACE OF THE BLOCK BACK
TOWARDS THE FILL TO ENSURE FURTHER TENSIONING OF THE GEOGRID
MATERIALS.
3.6 INSTALLATION OF TENSAR GEOGRID SHALL BE INSTALLED PER MANUFACTURES
RECOMMENDATIONS, TENSAR CORPORATION, MORROW, GEORGIA.
3.7 GEOGRID SHALL BE PRE -TENSIONED TO 90 PERCENT OF THE DESIGN LOAD FOR
THAT GEOGRID. THE PRE -TENSIONED LOAD SHALL BE MAINTAINED ON THE
GEOGRID UNTIL COMPACTION OF ENTIRE OVERLYING FILL LIFT IS COMPLETED.
4.0 CHANGES TO GEOGRID LAYOUT OR PLACEMENT
4.1 NO CHANGES TO THE TENSAR GEOGRID LAYOUT, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED
TO, LENGTH, GEOGRID TYPE, OR ELEVATIONS, SHALL BE MADE WITHOUT THE
