HONOR WALLS
Each department at
City Hall maintains an
Honor Wall. The walls
are prominent in the
public area and feature
notes from the public
highlighting outstanding
work by city staff. If
someone has gone above
and beyond, let us know
and we’ll post it!
“Coffee with a Cop” starts Monday
How would
you like to
be stopped
by a police
officer – not
for a speeding
ticket or a noise
complaint, but
for a friendly cup
of coffee at a
local Starbucks?
In order to build
relationships with
our residents,
Renton police officers will be going where the people are, instead
of having the people come to them. Starting next week, Renton
police officers will be at various Starbucks locations for
“Coffee with a Cop.” They’d like to sit down with you for coffee and
an informal talk.
Several cities across the country have successfully implemented
this type of get-together and we believe it’s a logical extension
of our police outreach program. Thanks to Renton Chamber
of Commerce, Renton Reporter, Starbucks and Renton Police
Department for making this happen.
The first gathering is September 12 at the Starbucks at 4637 NE
Sunset Blvd, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Five more are planned on
Mondays through October 17 at these locations. I hope you can
join us.
Renton Farmers Market challenges our
next generation
Renton Farmers Market showcases some of the best our city
has to offer: fruits, vegetables, arts & crafts and foods from
local farmers. The market stresses education by demonstrating
the latest ideas in food preparation, storage and conservation,
and teaching our youth about healthy eating through the Kids
Passport Program. This program gives young visitors a project
each week--coloring, drawing, scavenger hunts–and upon
completion they get their “passport” stamped. The aim was to
have them see fruits and vegetables as more than something they
don’t like. Over the program’s 10 weeks, 323 participated and I
was pleased to present certificates to the 10 who completed all 10
challenges. Congratulations to all who participated and thanks to
the market for providing a fun way to educate and challenge our
youth.

DID YOU KNOW?
Renton’s businesses – a century of
excellence
We are very fortunate to have so many businesses and
corporations that call Renton home. These companies – big
and small – provide valuable jobs to Renton and Puget Sound
residents, create a strong community and help promote a
better quality of life for all. Plus, some of them are national
and international leaders that have made history and are
creating the future for business and industry.
This year two outstanding Renton businesses have hit the
century mark. As a way of commemorating this important
milestone I had an opportunity to recognize them with the
first ever “Mayor’s Century Award.” At the Business Excellence
Awards on September 8, hosted by Renton Chamber of
Commerce, I was honored to present this award to Boeing
and Brotherton Cadillac Buick GMC for 100 years of excellence.
Other business were also recognized at the event including Fred Meyer for customer service, Boeing and
First Financial Northwest Bank for community leadership, Renton Prep for outstanding non-profit, Chuan
Tao Kung Fu for business excellence (1-10 employees) and McLendon Hardware for business excellence
(10+ employees). The event was co-sponsored by Renton Chamber of Commerce, Renton Reporter, First
Financial Northwest Bank, The Renton Printery, Rain City Catering and Morning Star Creative Group.
