Boeing celebrates: 75 years in Renton; 737 MAX 9
Boeing has been a
household name in the
Renton community for
the past 75 years. Nearly
everybody you meet has
had a family member or
friend who worked for the
Boeing Company.
As part of their 75th
Anniversary, Boeing
executives invited
members of the city
council and me to attend
a special luncheon at
the plant Thursday. Following lunch, we watched a very interesting video on the history of Boeing in
Renton, dating back to 1941, when the first facility was built. From B-29 bombers used in WWII, to the
current 737 MAX, Boeing has led the world in the production of commercial jet airplanes.
We like to brag that every 737 flying throughout the world today was built in Renton. It’s hard to
imagine how many careers in aerospace were created in this community and the economic benefit this
state has enjoyed due to having Boeing as the state’s largest employer.
At the luncheon, I had the opportunity to join Erik Nelson, vice president of Boeing’s delivery center,
in signing a document noting Boeing and the City of Renton’s 75 years of partnership. The document
read:
“Boeing opened a factory in Renton in 1941 and is proud to have been a member of the community for 75
years.
The city is a valued partner and played a vital role in the success of Boeing and its employees who over
generations have called Renton home.
Boeing recognizes the special and enduring relationship it has with the city of Renton and looks forward
to shared prosperity for years to come.”
Our city has prospered in many ways due to having Boeing in our community. We look forward to 75
more years of successful airplane manufacturing!

Forum focuses on combating hate crimes
This past weekend, the Sikh community took proactive steps to combat hate crimes by holding a panel
discussion with local and national experts.
Here’s my message to the community:
“Thank you to the Khalsa Gurmat Center for hosting this important forum on hate crimes that impact our
community.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of concern about hatred and violence in our country, with incidents targeting
innocent people. Some of you have witnessed this up close and personal, and live in fear of what may
happen to your families.
The City of Renton will not tolerate any hate crimes against members of our community. We will
investigate, and prosecute when possible, any hate crime incidents that occur in our city. Renton is an
inclusive city and has always been a place that celebrates diversity and religious tolerance. This is our
commitment to you—if you feel unsafe, we are here to protect you.
Our city must always be a beacon of tolerance and hope for all. Today it is more important than ever
before that we do everything in our power to ensure the safety and equal treatment of all members of our
community.
I hope this forum helps all our communities in Renton reach a new level of respect, understanding,
connection and acceptance.”
We’ve all seen recent stories about hate crimes, including some in nearby communities, and I applaud
the Sikhs for taking the lead. I want to assure them, and all our citizens, that as a city we respect all and
will not tolerate hate crimes or crimes of any kind.
Police Chief Milosevich was part of a panel on law enforcement.
Several members from our Economic Development staff
and I spent a couple hours with Jim Spady and members
of his family, touring Renton and looking at potential
sites for a new Dick's Drive-in.
The Spady family held an online vote to determine a
location for their next location: either south King County
or east King County. The southend won by a large
margin.
It was great to spend time with the Spadys and we hope
Renton becomes home to the next Dick's Drive-in!
