CryOut! accepts the keys to a new van at City Hall. The van was the culmination of work with King
County Councilmember Reagan Dunn.
At Tuesday’s Renton Farmers Market, I was
privileged to present certificates to 24 kids
who completed the market’s eight-week
Kid’s Passport program. The program uses
fun and educational activities to encourage
kids to eat healthy and learn what farmers
go through to produce the delicious fruits
and vegetables we all get to enjoy.
This was the program’s third year and
we’ve seen an increase in participation
each year. As a matter of fact, 13 of this
year’s participants took part last year. That
certainly bodes well for the future.
My congratulations to them for a job well done and my thanks to Washington State University’s Food
$ense program and to Wizards of the Coast, who donated some fabulous prizes.

Yesterday, it was my pleasure to join King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn and donate a van to
CryOut! I worked with him to secure a retired Metro van to help with their after-school programs.
CryOut! has been an important part of our community since 2008, working with the youth of Renton.
They provide a place to gather and host community forums to discuss issues. They offer an after school
program for teens, and during the summer it’s not uncommon to see youth of all ages gathered at
their headquarters at Harambee Church on South Third Avenue.
Their work with our police department, interacting with the officers in activities outside their normal
line of duty, has been instrumental in developing a bond of trust. CryOut! was a part of the police
department’s first Teen PeaceFest earlier this year; a sponsor of a series of Teen Summits, where they
discussed issues with city leaders; and a prime force behind our first Unity March last October.
CryOut! will be part of our second Unity March, along with the city, police, and the Renton African-
American Pastoral Group (RAAP). This year’s theme is “We’re stronger together” and will take place on
September 28, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Piazza Park.
