Festival and Unity March highlight next 8 days
It’ll be a busy and fun time in our city over the next
week as we host two special events.
It’s our second annual Renton Multicultural Festival
at Carco Theatre this Friday (7-10 p.m.) and at Renton
Pavilion Event Center on Saturday (3-7 p.m.). It’s your
family, friends, and neighbors sharing their heritage and
showcasing the diversity that makes Renton unique.
Saturday will feature a storytelling booth so you can
put your family’s story on tape for use as a display at
the Renton History Museum.
Next Thursday it’s our second annual Unity March and
Rally. It brings together individuals from all sides of
Renton to hear speakers and march, all with the goal of
creating “One Renton” a place where everyone is and
feels welcome. We’ll march from 3-4:30 p.m., starting
and ending at Piazza Park. I hope you can join us.
Both events are the result of hard work by two
outstanding community groups, my Inclusion Task
Force and the Renton African-American Pastoral Group,
or RAAP. Renton is one of the most diverse cities in the
state and I am committed to inclusion for all and to
build connections with ALL communities, especially
limited or non-English speaking residents and ethnic
groups.
We’re working hard to make Renton a safe city for all
our citizens. I hope you’ll take time this weekend or
next Thursday to come celebrate with us.
The Renton Multicultural Festival starts a two-day run on Friday from 7-10 p.m. at Carco Theatre and
continues Saturday from 3-7 p.m. at Renton Pavilion Event Center. The Unity March and Rally is on
Thursday, September 28 from 3-4:30 p.m. at Piazza Park.
Festival wins award
The inaugural Renton Multicultural
Festival was honored by the
National Association of Government
Communicators with their Award of
Excellence.
This award formally recognizes what
we knew: it takes strong collaboration
between city staff, dozens of community
volunteers, including members of the
Mayor’s Inclusion Task Force, and, of
course, the performers, to put on an
event that captures the spirit of Renton.
The festival was also featured this week
on KING5’s Evening.
Public Works crews took five large vehicles to the Renton Library on Monday for a little show-and-tell
with some youngsters. They got to climb into the cabs, test out the steering wheel, and even honk the
horn. They also got to keep their construction hats. Thank you to our Public Works crews for doing this.
Who knows, maybe there’s a future backhoe or vactor truck operator pictured.
