Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the project LUA23-000300, ECF
located at 1404 SW Grady Way. Based on the information provided and our
understanding of the project and its APE, the Duwamish Tribe recommends an
archaeological review performed for this project. This is in an area the
Duwamish Tribe considers culturally significant and has a high probability to
have unknown archaeological deposits. The project location is within about a
half mile of one of our ancestral village sites and as well as a previous survey.
The DAHP WISAARD predictive model indicates that a survey is highly advised
with a very high risk for encountering cultural resources. The borelogs from
the PanGEO geotechnical report indicates alluvium with organic layers and
shell fragments below fill. Alluvium and organic layers are sediments that have
potential for precontact cultural materials. We request that if any
archaeological work or monitoring is performed, we would like notification.
Cultural and archaeological resources are non-renewable and are best
discovered prior to ground disturbance. The Tribe would also like the
opportunity to be present if or when an archaeologist is on site in the event
that an artifact or cultural resource is encountered. In addition, the Tribe
strongly recommends that only native vegetation be used for any proposed
landscaping and that wetland and stream buffers are maintained to enhance
native avian life and native pollinators as well as to mitigate seasonal urban
flooding.
