Enclosed is the revised landscape plan for the strip of land adjacent to our fence (ref. LUA06-097, SF). The changes are
as follows:
1. The rose bushes will be replaced by camellias.
2. The serviceberry and vine maple trees will be replaced by 4 arborvitae.
3. The wavy grass border will be replaced by mulch (there isn't enough space to get the look we wanted, especially after
the bushes get bigger).

Subject: Questions About Street Trees and Landscape Plan Revision
Dear Ms. Petzel,
We are trying to complete our landscaping adjacent to our fence (ref. LUA06-097 SF) and have a couple of questions:
I. We were planning to plant some trees between the fence and the sidewalk. However, we are having second thoughts
about this because there are gas, electric, and cable/phone lines directly beneath and spanning the entire length of the
strip of land between the fence and the sidewalk. These lines are approximately located between 18" and 3' beneath the
surface and we are concerned that tree roots may damage these lines and prevent access to them. The hydrangeas that
we have planted can get quite tall (>8') and we were wondering if they could be considered as trees ifwe let them get tall
enough. Are we still required to plant trees here despite the power lines, or are the flower bushes adequate?
2. We wanted to replace the rose bushes with camellia bushes. We are concerned that the neighborhood children might
injure themselves on the rose bush thorns. Are camellia bushes acceptable?

Please disregard the email I sent you on Friday morning, June 8. I sent that out before I checked my voicemail and heard
the message that you left for me.
We have two reasons for our extension request:
The first reason regards the weather. We are new to this area and did not anticipate that there would be very few dry
weekends in the spring during which we could landscape around our fence. Consequently, we ran out of time to do so
before the original deadline.
The second regards obtaining approval from our Homeowner's Association of our landscape plan. We only recently
became aware of the necessity for approval and need some extra time to obtain it.

Dear Ms. Shane:
I received a copy of your proposed landscape plan for Special Fence Permit LUA-06-097 on
October 23, 2006. The City of Renton code requires that landscape plans have a variety of plant
species including street trees; shrubs or ground cover in_ -order to .enhance the appearance of a
fence along a street that exceeds the standard height allowed under code.
Your plan includes two types of shrubs, which is. acceptable in terms of. species variety.
· -However, in order to establish height variation from the proposed hydrangeas and rose bushes,
please revise your landscape plan to include several street trees. Trees should be a minimum 1"-
2" caliper if deciduous, or minimum 6' -8' height for coniferous trees.
Th_e revised landscape plan shoul_d be sent to my attention no later than 30 days after receiving
this letter. As a reminder, a:11 landscaping must bi: completed within 180 days of the
Development Services Division's approval of the landscaping plan. If you have any questions

We would like to erect a 6' tall fence in our side yard abutting Rosario Pl NE. The fence will be located
1 O' behind the property line (4 1/2' setback from the adjacent sidewalk) and out of the clear vision area.
All fence boards and posts will be cedar with a natural stain. The style and material of fencing will be
very similar if not identical to the majority of fences in our neighborhood. The finished face of the fence
will be oriented towards the street Permanent landscaping consisting of hydrangeas and ground cover
such as of elfin thyme or ice plants will be installed between the fence and the sidewalk.
