The City of Renton is in receipt of your request of June 5, 2006, to operate a hobby kennel at
1815 SE 18th Place. The following summarizes your request, project background, analysis, and
decision.
Summary of Request
Sharon Nye, of Shediiye Inc., applied for a City of Renton business license to operate a hobby
kennel for four (4) to eight (8) animals at her home. It was determined that a business license
was not required. A hobby kennel license, as described in Renton Municipal Code (RMC) 4-9-
100, is required.
Background
Mrs. Nye proposed to house four (4) to five (5) Shih Tzu show dogs. The dogs are nine to 15
pounds and kept predominately indoors. Mrs. Nye applied for a hobby kennel license on May
25, 2006. As required by RMC 4-9-100, public notice was posted on June 5, 2006. The
comment period concluded on June 19, 2006. Two (2) letters were received objecting to
operation of the kennel.
Analysis
1. The zoning for the residence is R-8 single family and is consistent in the neighborhood.
2. The animal breed is Shih Tzu and is nine to 15 pounds in weight. The applicant describes
the dogs as lap dogs that are people friendly and mostly quiet.
3. The facilities will be adequate because the applicant states the animals will be kept
mostly indoors.

4. The City of Renton animal control section has inspected the property and determined the
facility complies with RMC 4-4-010 standards for keeping animals, and that the applicant
does not have any history of complaints against her regarding animals. The City animal
control section will inspect the kennel annually to assure the facility remains in
compliance with requirements of animal keeping.
5. The proposed location will not have an adverse effect on abutting or adjacent properties
because the animals will be kept inside, and the dogs are small and quiet.
Decision
The decision is to approve the hobby kennel license is.subject to a fourteen-(14) day appeal
period from the date of this letter. Any appeal of the adniinistrative decision mustbe filed with
the City of Renton Hearing ExaJniner by 5:00 pm, August 8, 2Q06. If you have questions
