City Launches New Emergency Notification System
Have you ever thought of how you would receive critical information in the face of an emergency similar to the
recent earthquake in the Napa Valley?
Earthquakes, severe storms, power outages and floods are just some of the emergencies that may be
experienced. Ready in Renton, a city-wide campaign, works to provide you with information and resources to
help you be better prepared to take care of yourself and those that depend on you in an emergency.
Beginning in September, during Ready in Renton month, the City of Renton is expanding its emergency
notification capabilities. The new service is called Renton RedAlert. With Renton RedAlert the city can contact
you immediately and send you critical messages by phone or TDD, text or email. It is very important that you
provide your contact information to receive critical information about emergencies that may affect you and the
quick actions you should take for your own safety and the safety of those you love. Although the city has some
telephone numbers in its database from other sources, a significant number people don’t rely on landline
telephone for communications. They use a cell phone instead. This creates a problem when issuing alerts
because the city does not have most cell phone numbers in its database.
To help us reach you with important messages in an emergency, go to rentonwa.gov and click on Renton
RedAlert. You will need to enroll in the service to be sure you receive these emergency alerts, especially if you
don’t have a landline. We need your help to get as many people as possible signed up for Renton RedAlert during
the month of September. Challenge your Renton family, friends and co-workers to sign up.
To encourage more people to sign-up for Renton RedAlert and to connect with the city on social media, the city
also has an online promotion as part of Ready in Renton. Once you have signed up for Renton RedAlert, let us
know that you have signed up by visiting us on Twitter at @RentonEM and use the hashtag #RentonRedAlert. You
will be entered into a drawing to win a disaster kit. If you do not have internet access you may call 425-430-7053
to have staff assist you in registering for Renton RedAlert.
