Renton: The Renton Firefighter Local 864 team participated in the 25th annual Scott Firefighter
Stairclimb on Sunday, March 6. In this event, firefighters strap on sixty pounds of gear and climb sixty-
nine flights of stairs to the top of the Columbia Center for a total of 1,311 steps. The Scott Firefighter
Stairclimb is a charity event benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with a mission to raise
money to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of
patients and their families.
This event holds a personal significance for the Renton Firefighter Local 864 team.
“We have recently lost a few members of the Renton Fire Department to cancer,” said Renton firefighter
and Scott Firefighter Stairclimb participant Chris Krystofiak. “This career we chose puts us into dangerous
situations and exposes us to many different hazardous chemicals and environments. The newest
research is showing that firefighters have a much higher risk of cancer than the general population, so
the cause is near and dear to our hearts.”
The Renton team consisted of eight members who raised $7,840 to benefit blood cancer research. The
team members and their finishing times are:
•Josh Brown - 15:35
•Robbie Hyslop - 17:53
•Kelly Rose - 19:56
•Nick Bushnell - 22:17
•Justin Cox - 24:18
•Terrie Persons - 24:22
•Justin Bodolay - 26:28
•Chris Krystofiak - 30:41
Congratulations and thanks to the members of the Renton Firefighter Local 864 team for participating in
this challenging event and raising money for a good cause.
