City of Renton officially opens North Highlands Community Garden
CVS Pharmacy-funded project will benefit local non-profits
Renton, WA – Residents of Renton’s North Highlands community celebrated the grand opening of the
North Highlands Community Garden at a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 28.
City of Renton Mayor Denis Law and representatives from CVS Pharmacy cut the ribbon to officially
open the project.
The project was funded by a $10,000 grant from CVS Pharmacy and completed by several volunteer
groups including employees representing Symetra and The Boeing Company, Eagle Scout Kane
Anderson, Sustainable Renton, Seattle Tilth, and students from Renton and Hazen high schools.
The City of Renton will expand the program by partnering with Renton Housing Authority and local
non-profits to provide low cost classes on gardening, food preservation and healthy cooking classes.
The Garden consists of 13 galvanized garden plots, which are used by a cross section of local non-
profits, a preschool, seniors and families. The plots come in two sizes, 2’x4’ and 2’x6’. Gardeners are
able to enjoy their own produce which can be flowers, vegetables or fruits.
