HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-13-2021 - Chinese American WWII Veterans DayArmondoPavoneMayorWfiereas,despitebeingsubjectedtotheU.S.ChineseExclusionAct(1882—1943),alongwithotherdiscriminatorylawsthatrestrictedtheirrightsandtreatedthemassecond-classcitizens,nearly20,000ChineseAmericansvaliantlyservedintheUnitedStatesmilitaryduringWorldWarII;and‘Wfiereas,theseAmericanheroesdefendedournation’sdemocracyineverytheaterofwarandineverybranchofserviceevenastheyfacedprejudiceathomeandinthemilitary;andWftereas,ChineseAmericanWWIIVeteransneverlostsightofthepotentialandpromiseofanationwhereallpeoplearecreatedequal;andWfiereas,onDecember18,2018,theUnitedStatesCongresspassedtheCongressionalGoldMedalActtoawardthehighestcivilianhonor—aCongressionalGoldMedal—totheChineseAmericanWWIIVeterans;andWfiereas,onDecember9,2020,theSpeakeroftheHousebestowedtheCongressionalGoldMedalcollectivelytotheChineseAmericanWWIIVeterans;andWfiereas,manyofthesecourageousanddedicatedChineseAmericanWWIIVeteranslivedinandreturnedtothegreatStateofWashingtonandareasourceofinspirationforcurrentandfuturegenerationsofallWashingtonians;Wbw,tfierefore,I,ArmondoPavone,MayoroftheCityofRenton,doherebyproclaimNovember13,2021tobeCfiineseAmericanWWii‘VeteranscDayintheCityofRenton,andIencourageallcitizenstojoinmeinthisspecialobservance.InwitnesswfiereojIhavehereuntosetmyhandandcausedthesealoftheCityofRentontobeaffixedthis13thdayofNovember,2021.mondoavone,MayorCitReton,WashingtonProclamationRentonCityHaIl,7thFloor1055SouthGradyWay,Renton,WA98057.rentonwa.gov
