Dear Andrew Van Gordon,
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the project located at 900 S Grady Way. The Duwamish
Tribe understands that access is not to be revised and that only interior improvements on the building
are proposed. We also note that the existing gravel area is to be enclosed with fencing and on-site
landscaping between the fence and right of way. Based on the information provided and our
understanding of the project and its APE, the Duwamish Tribe recommends an inadvertent discovery
plan (IDP) if any ground disturbance cuts below asphalt/fill into native soils.
We note that the project location is within a mile of at least 8 Duwamish places names and near several
known archaeological sites. We also note that the DAHP WISAARD predictive model indicates that a
survey is highly advised with a very high risk for encountering cultural resources. In the unlikely event
that any archaeological work or monitoring is performed, we would like notification. Cultural and
archaeological resources are non-renewable and are best discovered prior to ground disturbance. The
Tribe would also like the opportunity to be present if or when an archaeologist is on site.
In addition, the Tribe strongly recommends that only native vegetation be used for any proposed
landscaping to enhance native avian life and native pollinators as well as to mitigate seasonal urban
flooding.
