Project Description and Analysis: The applicant requests a special fence permit to install a
six (6) foot high wrought iron/steel fence with associated sliding gate within the front yard
setback. The proposed fence is located within Residential· 8 zoning designation with a lot area
of 0.38 acres. The proposed fence would sit on top of a stone faced retaining wall
approximately 9.5 feet from the west property line and enclose the front yard. The retaining
wall varies in height from approximately 6 feet on the north end to approximately 2 feet on the
south end. The fence would have a four (4) inch opening in between each vertical slat. Two (2)
inch tubes would be used as fence posts as well as three (3) stone faced pillars used for the
sliding gate and pedestrian entrance.
In front of the fence, along the sidewalk, the applicant proposes to plant four (4) foot tall
rhododendrons and unspecified ground cover. The proposed fence would have two (2)
entrances. One entrance would be a sliding gate with a 16-foot wide opening for vehicles. The
second entrance would have a six (6) foot wide swinging gate for pedestrians and be located
south of the sliding gate. The total length of the proposed fence and gates would be
approximately 77 feet long.
The proposed fence's design would provide security and privacy for the property while reducing
the visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood by proposing a fence with 4 inch openings
in-between each vertical metal slat.
