Dear Mr. Smith,
ABC Herron Tree LLC is pleased to submit this addendum to the report dated May 23, 2023 for this
project. This report addresses the Hearing Examiner’s concerns regarding trees 97-101 as described in
the previous arborist reports for this project. The concerns are as follows:
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Assignment
On November 7, 2023, I was contacted by Dalton Smith, Director of Land Operations for Conner Homes and asked to provide
additional analysis regarding Trees 97-101 on lots 5 and 6 to address the concerns noted by the Hearing Examiner’s office as shown
below in Figure 4. Please refer to the map in Figure 1 above for the location of these trees.

Discussion and Conclusion
Using the formula outlined on page 24 of the United States Department of Agriculture Tree Owner’s
Manual (Adapted to the City of Renton) available on the city’s website at Tree Owner's Manual for the
Northeastern and Midwestern United States, NA-FR-04=07 (civiclive.com) the Protected Root Zones
(PRZ) for trees 97-101 are calculated by multiplying the Diameter at Breast Height of the tree times 1.5.
This is the radius in feet from the trunk of the tree that is considered the PRZ.
Figure 5
For trees # 97,98,99,100 and 101 disturbances within no more than one-third of the area within
the outer half of the area within the PRZ of each tree should be allowed. It is not recommended
to disturb the ground within the inner PRZ of each tree, which is the area encircling the base of
a tree equal to one half the diameter of the PRZ.
Excavation within the area of encroachment should be done by hand to the greatest extent
possible to minimize root disturbance and damage. During excavation inside of the allowable
area I will recommend that an arborist be onsite to perform root pruning as needed. Clean flush
cutting of roots will help protect the tree from fungal infection and allow for proper healing.

The following are the calculations for each of these trees based on the measurements recorded
in the American Forest Management report. Tree protection fencing should be established as
outlined in my previous report dated May 23, 2023.
Tree #97
DBH = 31”
31 x 1.5 = 46.5 = r
PRZ = πr2 = π x 46.52 = 6792.91 sq ft
Inner Half of PRZ = π(r/2)2 = 1698.23 sq ft
Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 6792.91 – 1698.23 = 5094.68 sq ft
1/3 of Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 5094.68/3 = 1698.23 sq ft allowable area of encroachment
Tree #98
DBH = 16”
16 x 1.5 = 24 = r
PRZ = πr2 = π x 242 = 1809.56 sq ft
Inner Half of PRZ = π(r/2)2 = 452.39 sq ft
Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 1809.56 – 452.39 = 1357.17 sq ft
1/3 of Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 1357.17/3 = 452.39 sq ft allowable area of encroachment
Tree #99
DBH = 26”
26 x 1.5 = 39 = r
PRZ = πr2 = π x 392 = 4778.36 sq ft
Inner Half of PRZ = π(r/2)2 = 1194.59 sq ft
Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 4778.36 – 1194.59 = 3583.77 sq ft
1/3 of Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 3583.77/3 = 1194.59 sq ft allowable area of encroachment
Tree #100
DBH = 38”
38 x 1.5 = 57 = r
PRZ = πr2 = π x 572 = 10207.03 sq ft
Inner Half of PRZ = π(r/2)2 = 2551.76 sq ft
Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 10207.03 – 2551.76 = 7655.27 sq ft
1/3 of Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 7655.27/3 = 2551.76 sq ft allowable area of encroachment
Tree #101
DBH = 31”
31 x 1.5 = 46.5 = r
PRZ = πr2 = π x 46.52 = 6792.91 sq ft
Inner Half of PRZ = π(r/2)2 = 1698.23 sq ft
Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 6792.91 – 1698.23 = 5094.68 sq ft
1/3 of Area of Outer Half of PRZ = 5094.68/3 = 1698.23 sq ft allowable area of encroachment

There are many conditions affecting a tree’s health and stability, which may be present and cannot be
ascertained, such as root rot, previous or unexposed construction damage, internal cracks, stem rot and
more which may be hidden. Changes in circumstances and conditions can also cause a rapid deterioration of
a trees’ health and stability. Adverse amount of time. While I have used every reasonable means to examine
these trees, this evaluation represents my opinion of the tree’s health at this point in time. These findings do
not guarantee future safety nor are they predictions of future events.
