We are writing this letter in support of our application for a hobby kennel license at 3414
Monterey Lane NE, in Renton, Washington. It recently came to our attention that we exceed the
limit of three household pets. We have three racing greyhounds, two Italian greyhounds, and
four cats. We may also baby sit the occasional greyhound or IG, with a donation being made to
the adoption group in lieu of payment to us for the babysitting. All of our babies have been
adopted through rescue groups. One Italian greyhound and one cat are quite elderly, and are
simply living their lives out with us as their loving and doting custodians.
My husband and I have volunteered with a retired racing greyhound adoption group,
Greyhound Pets, Inc., for nearly seven years. During that time, we have fostered in excess of
three dozen greyhounds, teaching them how to be house pets, appraising their personalities,
and readying them for suitable new adoptive homes. GPl's website may be found at
www.greyhoundpetsinc.org. Recently, we have also begun volunteering as a foster home with
an Italian Greyhound rescue group, IGCA. Their website can be found at

All of our animals are strictly inside creatures. Greyhounds and Italian greyhounds, by
virtue of little body fat and short smooth coats, have no tolerance for heat or cold. The dogs
venture outside to relieve themselves or perhaps to sun themselves for short periods of time,
and then they return to the h_ouse to sleep on the couch. A greyhound will sleep or lounge
quietly for literally 16-18 hours a day. The cats are never allowed outside, except for short
supervised explorations of the backyard.
Animal waste is promptly removed from our back yard and deposited in a tightly lidded
container away from the public. On our nightly walks, our dogs are kept on a leash and
prevented from using our neighbors' lawns for their toileting. They are well trained on a leash
and very gentle; they especially delight in meeting small children. We carry poop bags, and
clean up after our dogs when they use the common areas of our neighborhood.
Greyhounds are incredibly quiet animals. They will bark only to alert us that someone is
at our front door or that a particular dog they don't care for is walking past our house. Miles, our
new Italian greyhound, was never informed that sighthounds don't bark. We are continuing our
retraining to eliminate this habit, but it may take some time. Unfortunately, we have a multitude
of yappy dogs in our neighborhood who, when left outside for any length of time, launch into
prolonged barking. Miles does what any other dog would do, he answers the challenge. He is
learning that this is not acceptable behavior.

We have the emotional and financial wherewithal to keep all of our aiRiGf@\e,tJ, well
fed, and in top shape physically. We are well-educated, experienced and caring owners. bver
the years, we seem to have specialized in taking in foster dogs that are incredibly shy or who
have been mistreated, and turning them into happy, well-adjusted dogs that can then be
adopted into loving homes.
We find it unfortunate that the neighbor who complained to the police about our
household didn't have the simple courtesy to speak to us first. We were unaware of his concern,
and would have taken immediate steps to remedy an issue. In our eyes there was absolutely no
reason to involve the police in what could have been remediated with a friendly over-the-fence
discussion. And it should be noted that in seven years, this is the only neighbor who has ever
complained.
Frankly, we weren't aware that there is a limit to the number of allowed household
animals. We are happy to take whatever steps are necessary to legitimize a long-standing
situation and to comply with Renton's ordinance concerning household pets. Please do not
