PROPOSED WORK:
The VMAC was constructed in 2007 and features one (1) indoor and three (3) outdoor natural grass
practice fields for the Seattle Seahawks. A feature of the 19-acre Training Facility in Renton,
Washington, is approximately 1.77 acres of restored shoreline along a ¼-mile section of Lake
Washington. The two properties that underlie the project site are formally known as South Baxter
and North Baxter. The project is located in the SW14 of Section 29, T24N, ROSE, W.M. The site is
regularly monitored and inspected under the guideline described in the Streams and Lake
Study/Mitigation Plan (Cedarock Consultants, Inc., and A.C. Kindig & Co. 2002).
The Fields & Grounds staff at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center regularly maintain the shoreline to
promote the health of the existing plants, remove invasive species, and provide a habitat that is
beneficial to wildlife and Lake Washington water quality.
Currently, there is one large, mature cottonwood tree that has died and another that is highly likely
to die in the near future. The removal of these trees is important due to potential hazards to our site
use as well as the integrity of the shoreline. The plan would be to remove top growth on the two
cottonwoods located at the NW corner of our training fields. We would leave a 15-20 ft habitat snag
from the trunk and distribute the debris along the native area in the shoreline to create additional
wildlife habitat. We will replace these two tress with 7 new tree plantings and install protective
barriers around the base of the new trees. Trees will be irrigated through automated irrigation
system and located in the same general area of the existing cottonwood trees. (see Project Map)
Beaver Protection will be cylinder cages made of sturdy galvanized welded wire fencing with 2”
mesh opening and at least 3 ft high.
New trees will consist of:
- [2] Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) – 5-7 ft height – minimum 10 ft on center
- [2] Douglas Fir (Pseudotsunga menziesii) – 5-7 ft height – minimum 10 ft on center
- [2] Shore Pine (Pinus contorta var. contorta) – 5-7 ft height – minimum 10 ft on center
- [1] Sitka spruce (Picea stichensis) – 5-7 ft height – minimum 10 ft on center
