They were infor- med that although a proposal might appear to be acceptable, the final decision would be made by the Planning Commission after a public hearing. Friday, September 10, 1976 Long wait pays off Record-Chronicle - Section A - Page 3 Planners reject higher density Four hours of waiting paid off Wednesday night for a group of Highlands residents protesting a rezone in their neighborhood. Residents near the 700 block of Monroe Avenue Northeast waited, from 8 p.m. until nearly midnight to be heard by the Renton Planning. Commission Wednesday. But when neighbors told the com- mission they feared rezoning of property owned by Harold P. Peterson at 762 Monroe Ave. NE to cut minimum lot size from 35,000 square feet to less than one-third that size would hurt the neighbor- hood, the commissioners at last listened. Neighbors led by Mike Smith, 3402 NE Seventh, said the area is ‘‘unique . country surrounded by the bustling city.” He said permitting . Peterson to subdivide his lot would be poor planning that could lead to further subdivision of the large lots ~—- most in the development at least 30,000 square feet. The commission agreed. By unanimous vote, planning commissioners rejected Peterson’s request to subdivide his property into an 8,000 square foot lot and a 10,000 square foot lot served by a ‘‘pipestem”’ driveway. Peterson had asked permission to use a 20-foot wide driveway past the house on the smaller front lot to provide access to tthe 10,000 square foot piece of property from Monroe Street. Peterson wasn’t at the Wednesday night meeting to defend his request.
