Diagram.pdf Hi Alex, We inspected a private tree that we believe was a 41 inch diameter red oak adjacent to SW 7 Street and Smithers Avenue South; the tree was removed and only the stump and some rounds of wood remained at the site. In addition, we found four sidewalk slabs that had been heaved, presumably by tree roots, but not repaired. As mitigation we offer the following: 1.) Complete the removal of the tree by grinding the stump and roots. 2.) Completely remove all the grindings along with other tree parts still on site. Grinding should remove any roots and soil that prevent the final grade being the same as the sidewalk grade once the sidewalk is replaced. 3.) The resulting hole should be filled with topsoil, lightly compacted, grass seed spread and lightly raked into the soil, covered with a light dusting of compost, and maintained in a live condition. Sodding is also acceptable. 4.) Replace the 4 sidewalk slabs heaved by the roots according to City specifications. 5.) Plant two replacement trees using a small maturing tree such as Amelanchier laevis, Alleghaney serviceberry, or similar. The tree should be specimen grade quality with a central leader at the top and no smaller in caliper when measured at 6 inches above grade of 2 inches. We need to see a picture of the tree before purchase to insure a quality tree and to prevent its removal and replacement should it not be to standards. The trees can be placed in the adjacent planting strip; the City will mark the exact location of the trees upon notification by the property owner by calling 425-430-6601 (note: call 811 to locate underground utilities before digging). We are attaching planting specifications that should be followed during planting.
