HomeMy WebLinkAboutM_Impact_Description_180815_v1Impact Description Project Name: Cedar Park Apartments Tree Removal • No negative impacts to trees that will remain on the Cedar Park Property is expected by removing the trees that are proposed to be removed as they are not near the trees that will remain. • No Negative impacts to trees on abutting propertied will be caused by the removal of trees that are proposed as they are not in the proximity of said trees. • No supplemental trees are required but 31 trees will be planted in or near the place of each tree that is removed. More trees may be added at the direction of the Owner. Tree replacements will be a combination of the following: 1. Weeping Alaska Cedar 2. October Glory Maple 3. Paperbark Maple 4. Purple Smoke Tree 5. Weeping White Spruce 6. Golden Chain Tree • See Planting Specs on page 2-7 32 93 00 PLANTING PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY SECTION 32 93 00 PLANTING A. Scope of Work: The work includes furnishi ng and installati on of trees, shrubs , ground covers, vines and planting accessories. The work also includes labor , materials , necessary equipment and services to transplant one existing oak tree onsite. 1.2 RELATED SECTIONS A. Coord inate related work specified in other parts of the Contract Documents , inc luding but not limited to the following: 1. Section 31 00 00, EARTHWORK . 2. Section 32 84 00, IRRIGATION. 3. Section 32 84 13, DRIP IRRIGATION. 4. Section 32 91 13, SOIL PREPARATION. 1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Comply w ith sizing and grading standards of "American Standard for Nursery Stock ," cur rent edition. B. Nomenclature: conform to Hortus Third compiled by the L.H. Bailey Arboretum, Cornell University, 1976. C. All plants shall be nurser y grown materials that have been grown in a nursery for at least one yea r. Nursery climatic conditions must be similar t o those in the localit y of the project. All plants to be weed free at the time of planting. D. Planting stock furnished shall be at least the minimum size indicated. Larger stock is acceptable at no additional cost to the Owner, and providing that the larger plants will not be cut back to size indicated. Provide plants indicated by two (2) measurements so that only a maximum of twenty-five percent (25%) are of the minimum size indicated and seventy-five percent (75%) are of the maximum size as shown on the Drawings. 1.4 REFERENCES A. This section incorporates by reference the latest revisions of the following documents. 1. American Association of Nurserymen (AAN): a. American Standard for Nursery Stock (ASNS), ANSI Z60.1 (ASNS). 2. American Joint Committee on Hort icultural Nomenclature: a. Standardized Plant Names (SPN). 3. Revised Code of Washington (RCW): a. RCW Chapter 17.10 Noxious Weeds - Control Boards. 4. Tree Care Industry Associati on (T CIA): a. ANSI A300 Standards. 1.5 COORDINATION A. Coordinate protection and transplanting of red oak tree with site demolition and other site and utility work. Requirements for temp o rary protection of trees and plants shall be as stated in the Tree Protection Specification. B. Coordinate preparation of planting soil, irrigation installation, and planting w ith subgrade wo rk. C. Coord inate layout and installation of plant material w ith installation of irrigation system to ensure that there w ill be complete and full coverage of the planted areas. Install, test, and accept irrigation systems before planting begins. 32 93 00 - 1 32 93 00 PLANTING 1.6 LANDSCAPE PRECONSTRUCTION MEETING A. Arrange a preconstruction meeting at least 14 days prior to start of work . Include the Owne r's Representative, Landscape Architect, Contractor, Planting and Irrigation Subcontractor(s), and other Subcontractors. B. Review the proposed landscape schedule, source of soils and plants, considerate ion of substitutions, review of specifications, soil preparation, and planting and irrigation procedures. C. Provide meeting notes for approval by Owner 's Representative. 1.7 SUBMITTALS A. Transplanting of red oak tree 1. Submit a schedule of approx imate date and duration of transplant operation. 2. Provide descriptive plan of preparation of tree for transplanting, and method for extracting, transporting and replanting of tree , including: a. Tree protection to ensure no encroachment and no site work is performed within the c ritical root zone prior to transplant operation. b. Establish water source for watering prior, during and after transplant operation. c. Tree assessment and recommendations by a Certified Arborist f o r preparation of tree for transplanting. d. Tree guys and anchors for establishing tree in new location. e. Equipment proposed for use in transplanting tree. B. Plant Materials: 1. Plant Procurement: a. Within 60 days of the Notice to Proceed, ver ify all sources of supply to ensure that all plants of the species, size and quality specified are available. It is the Co ntracto r 's responsibility to locate plant materials. b. Submit list of all plant material to the Owner's Representative for acceptance prior to shipment to site. c. When requested by the Landscape Architect , produce sale receipts for nursery stock and certificates of inspection from required authorities. 2. Planting Quantity: Total number of plants shall be as indicated on planting plan. If this total differs from the plant legend, notify the Owner's Representative before bid date. The plan takes precedence over the specification for total plant quantity. C. Planting Accessories 1. Landscape Steel Edging with Stakes: a. Product Data: For steel edging and stakes, submit selected manufacturer's technical data and standard installation instruct ions. b. Samples: Submit 8" long sample of edging and stake in specified color. 2. Product information for corten planter boxes. 3. Product information for tree stacks. 1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. All plant material shall be transp orted to planting locations with care to prevent damage. Tie back branches as necessary and protect bark from chafing with burlap bags. Do not drag plant material along ground without proper protection of roots and branches. B. If planting is delayed more than 24 hours after delivery, set balled and burlapped plants on the ground, we ll protected with soil or wet peat. Adequately cover all roots of bare root material w ith soil or wet peat. Protect rootballs from freezing, sun, drying winds or mechanical damage. Water as necessary until planted. Do not heel in plants for more than one (1) week. C. Handle and deliver landscape edging and stakes in a manner to protect from bending, scratchi ng, chipping , and other damage. Store landscape edging and stakes in a dry location , protected from the weather and moisture. D. Handle and deliver corten planter box in a manner to protect from bending, scratching, chipping, and other damage. Store in a location and manner w here weather ing of the steel w ill not stain pavement. Conformed Set 05/19/2017 32 93 00 - 2 32 93 00 PLANTING 1.9 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS A. Planting Time: 1. Do not install plants when ambient temperatures may drop below 35 degrees F or climb above 80 degrees F. 2. Do not install plants when wind velocity exceeds 30 MPH. 3. Bareroot Stock: Plant bareroot stock from October to February only. 4. Balled and Burlapped Stock: Plant during periods which are normal for such work , as determined by season, weather conditions and accepted practice. 5. Do not plant when ground is frozen or excessively wet. B. Disposal of Waste Materials: 1. Remove all plastic labels, materials, and synthetic burlap from planting pit, after plant is in place. Remove from site. 1.10 WARRANTY A. Warrant plant material to remain alive and be in healthy, vigorous condition for a period of one (1) years after comp letion and acceptance of entire project. Inspection of plants w ill be made by the Owner's Representative at completion of planting. B. Replace, in accordance with the drawings and specifications, all plants that are dead or, as determined by the Owner's Representative, are in an unhealthy or unsightly condition, and have lost their natural shape due to dead branches , or other causes due to the Cont racto r 's negligence. The cost of such replacement(s) is at the Contractor 's expense. Warrant all replacement plants for one (1) years after installation, unless otherwise specified. C. Warranty shall not include damage or loss of trees, plants or ground covers caused by fires, floods , freezing rains, lightning storms , o r winds over 75 MPH, winter kill caused by extreme cold and severe winter conditions not typical of planting area; acts of vandalism or negligence on the part of the Owner. D. Remove and immediately replace all plants, as determined by the Owner's Representative, to be unsatisfactory during the initial planting installation. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PLANT MATERIAL A. Trees and Shrubs: 1. Trees: Straight trunks w ith leader intact, undamaged and uncut. Root ball diameter shall be in accordance with ASNS. 2. Plant materials shall be sound, healthy and vigorous; well-branched and densely foliated when in leaf; free from disease , insect pests, eggs or larva and w ith healthy , well developed root systems. B. Balled and Burlapped Stock: 1. Dig with firm , natural, balls of earth of sufficient diameter and depth to encompass fibrous and feeding root system. 2. Wrap root balls firmly with burlap and bind with twine or w ire mesh. C. Container Stock: 1. Grown in delivery containers for not less than s ix (6) months but not more than two (2) years. 2. Root bound conditions and broken balls of earth will not be allowed. Do not handle by trunks, stems or tops. 2.2 FERTILIZER A. Fertilizer: Slow release 15-15-15. Acceptab le product is Best Endure 15-15-15 or approved equal. B. Fertilizer Tablets: Agriform 20-10-5 with trace minerals or approved equal. 2.3 MULCH A. Bark Mulch: Medium size ground Fir or Hemlock bark of uniform color free from weed seeds, sawdust and splinters. Mulch shall not contain resin, tannin, wood fiber or other compounds Conformed Set 05/19/2017 32 93 00 - 3 32 93 00 PLANTING detrimental to plant life. Moisture content of bagged mulch not to exceed 22 percent. Size range of 1/2-inch to 1-1/4-inch with a maximum of 20 percent passing 1/2-inch screen. 2.4 PLANTING ACCESSORIES 1. Landscape Steel Metal Edging with Stakes a. Steel Landscape Edging shall be an all-steel interlocking system , 1/8" thick, and 4" min. depth, in 16 to 20' long sections with 6 steel stakes per section, having a powder coated green finish. Supply adequate stakes for each section to be installed. Stakes shall be 15" long steel construction as manufactured by: 1) Sure-lac Edging Corporation, 494 E. 64th Street, Holland, MI, 49423 , Ph. 800 787-3562 ; or 2) Border Concepts, P.O. Box 471185, Charlotte, NC, 28247, Ph: 704 541-5509; Collier Metal Specialties, Inc., Dallas Texas, Ph: 1800 829-8225 ; 3) or approved equal. 2. Carten Planter Boxes a. Carten planter box shall be 48" x 48" x 16" height. Product model is NiceR48. Planter shall be manufacturer by: Nice Planter LLC, website: NicePlanter.com, Phone: 206.486.0936. Email: nicep lant er@gma il.com 3. Tree stakes and guys a. Stakes: 2-inch diameter lodge pole pine stake with chamfered tops. b. Ties: Recycled polypropylene , chainlock guys. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSPECTION A Inspection of Trees and Shrubs: 1. Inspection and acceptance of all plants, prior to planting, is mandatory and the Landscape Architect reserves the right to reject any or all plant material at any time until final inspection and acceptance. Plants shall be labeled at the time of inspection. Remove labels after acceptance and prior to final walk through. 3.2 PREPARATION A The irrigation system shall be completed and tested prior to planting installation so that it is capable of keeping the site watered for planting and establishment. 3.3 INSTALLATION A General: Notify the Owner's Representative of all subsurface draining or soil conditions detrimental to growth or survival of plant material. B. Trees and Large Shrubs: 1. Locations of all trees shall be inspected and accepted by the Landscape Architect prior to planting. Indicate the location of each tree with a 2-inch-square by 2-foot-long wood stake or wire stake with flag. Place large containerized or balled and burlapped shrubs in proposed locations for observation by Landscape Architect prior to planting. Begin planting after approval of locations by the Landscape Architect. 2. Procedure for planting: a. For trees , apply fertilizer to backfill at one (1) pound per inch caliper of tree. b. For large shrubs, apply plant tablets at manufacturer 's recommended rate for new installations. c. Add native soil to bottom of plant pit and tamp firmly to prevent settlement. Place plant in pit and remove binding of upper one-third of balled and burlapped stock and loosen burlap. Remove all plastic. d. Fill planting pit to two-thirds depth and tamp with foot. Flood holes with sufficient water. e. After surplus water drains off, fill hole to finish grade with backfill and form soil basin around each tree and large shrub. Tamp soil firmly. Stake tree. C. Ground Cover and Small Shrubs: 1. Place plants in containers in perimeter of proposed locations for observation by Landscape Architect prior to planting. An area of approximately 1,000 square feet should Conformed Set 05/19/2017 32 93 00 - 4 32 93 00 PLANTING be laid out showing a typical configuration. Begin planting after approval of locations by Landscape Architect. a. Clean areas of all extraneous material. b. Apply fertilizer to amended soil at 30 pounds per 1,000 square feet for ground cover and small shrub areas. c. Dish out plant pockets in staggered rows. Set plants to grade. If on slope, lay plant at angle with slope before backfilling with amended soil. d. Container grown stock; remove plants from containers prior to planting. D. Mulching: 1. Cultivate soil to remove all existing weeds and grass. Apply layer of bark mulch throughout planting beds and under existing trees. 2. Cover planting soil in corten planters with 2" depth medium compost. E. Staking: Stake all deciduous and coniferous trees to stand plumb immediately after planting. F. Pruning: Prune all trees only to remove broken or damaged branches, or for aesthetic purposes as directed by the Landscape Architect. Branches will be pruned at the branch collar. Neither stubs nor flush cuts will be acceptable. G. Edging: The metal edging is to be used to border the planting beds near around the existing conifers as shown on the drawings. Edging shall be installed per manufacturer 's recommendations under the condition specified. H. Carten planter: Install planters on level, firmly compacted soil clear of debris and construction waste. Fill planters with planting soil mix. 3.4 MAINTENANCE 1. Maintain planting in a healthy growing condition acceptable to the Owner's Representative for a minimum of 90 days after final acceptance. B. Maintenance shall include cultivating, weeding , watering, and pruning (only as directed). Application of herbicides, pre-emergent herbicides , insecticides , or other toxic substances are not allowed for general weed and pest control. Use integrated pest management practices (IPM), using least tox ic methods of control. If it is determined by a horticultural expert that disease or pest control chemicals are needed, secure Owner's written approval before application. 1. Re-set settled plants to proper grade and position. Restore planting saucer and adjacent material and remove dead material. 2. Straighten, repair and adjust guy wires and stakes as required. 3. Correct defective work as soon as possible after deficiencies become apparent and weather and season permit. 4. Water trees, plants and ground cover beds within the first 24 hours of initial planting, and not less than twice per week until final acceptance. 3.5 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING 1. Maintain the Site in an orderly condition during the progress of Work. Continuously and promptly remove excess and waste materials; keep adjacent lawn areas, walks and roads clear. Store materials and equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Immediately remove rejected materials from the property. Promptly remove equipment , surplus material, and debris and trash resulting from operations under this Contract upon completion and prior to initial acceptance of Work. Leave the Site in a neat, orderly condition, broom clean. B. Protect landscape work and materials from damage due to landscape operations , operations by other contractors and trades and trespassers. Provide adequate and proper care of all plant material and work done, and maintain protection during installation and Warranty and Establishment periods. Adequate and proper care means keeping all plant material in a healthy , growing condition and includes removing the weeds, litter and other debris along with retaining the finished grades in a neat uniform condition. C. Cover and protect pervious concrete sidewalks and pervious paver areas from getting soiled or clogged with planting soil and mulch. Inspecti on to determine final acceptance of planted areas will be made by the Owner 's Representative , upon Contractor's request. Provide notification at least ten (10) working days before requested inspection dates. 1. Fina l acceptance will be grant ed in wr iting after complet ion of the 90-day maintenance period. Planted areas w ill be accepted prov ided a ll requirements have been complied with and plant materials are alive and in a healthy , v igoro us condit ion. 3.7 WARRANTY PERIOD 1. Duration of Warranty: 1. Plant mate ria ls s hall be warranted for a period of one (1) years from the date of final acceptance. 2. Replace defective plant materials noted and upon completion of replacements , final approva l of all warranted plants will be ver ified in writ ing by the Landscape Arch itect.
