Absent i Alicia Glenwell 11. APPROVAL OF MIRIUTES j A motion was made by Robin, and seconded by Margie to approve the September i and November minutes as written. All were in favor,,motion carried, minutes I approved as submitted. � 111. AGENCY PRESENTATIONS: UKRAtNIAN COMMUNITY CENTER OF UI/ASHINGTON ' Oleg Pynda, Executive Director, provided an overview of their programs. They help clients apply for citizenship, apply for services, locate housing, and gain '' employment. They also affer translation services, parenting classes, mental health ' counseling and lega) advocacy. There are after school programs for youth and the '' Ukrainian School provides instruction in Ukrainian as a second language and teaches . the culture and history of Ukrainian culture. Seniar programs include House of Peace, an adult day health care facility, and recreatian activities and nutrition services. connnnuN�r�Es�N scHoocs oF RFn��onr(c�sRJ ; Sue Paro, Executive Director: CISR is a partnership between the City of Renton and the Renton School District. They address the non-academic barriers to student success by providing family support, access ta basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter, and connecting families to community resources. This help keeps kids in school and on track for graduation. CISR served over 6,000 students and family members during the 2010-2011 school year. The Family Liaison Program is often the first contact for a family in need to stabilize and get back on their feet, helping � students to be able to come to school better able to learn. The Mentor Program City of Renton Human Services Advisory Committee Minutes December 20, 2011 Page 2 of 3 � matches volunteers with students in need of a caring, cansistent adult. They serve as role models and support and encaurage their student's success. All services are free to the students and families in Renton School District. Evaluations show that i these programs improve academic achievement and attendance. ; KING CDUNTY SEXUAL ASSAULT RESOURCE CENTER(KCS,4RC) Mary Ellen Stone, Executive Director: KCSARC is a victim-advocacy organization that � worl<s to provide critical support,tools and direct services ta children, women and ( men. They staff a 24-hour,toll-free Resource Line, and pravide trauma-specific ; therapy and legal advocacy. They strive to help victims heal and become survivors. � Over half of KCSARC's clients are under the age of 18 and it is not uncommon for the � family�to receive multiple services. For example, a legal advocate may wark with the family through any legal proceedings, a therapist may work with the child on an ; individual basis and a family services specialist may work with the parents to help i them gain sl<ills and knowledge to suppart their child. KCSARC also works to educate F the community about conditions that lead to sexual violence and helps them change � those conditions. i VALLEY CITIES COUNSELING AND CONSULTATION(VCC) Ken Taylor, Executive Director, and Lora Dear, Domestic Violence Manager, ' explained the programs offered through their agency. Outreach based mental health and substance abuse treatment is offered through the Rentan Homeless Services program. They also link the hameless to community services, including access to healthcare. The Promoting Healthy Families Against Domestic Vialence program provides ongoing services to parents and children af domestic violence, including education,support, safety planning, and referral to resources that help '; ernpawer families to be self sufficient. There have been many requests from teens ; far help recently, so Laura developed a teen dating violence brochure that will get ', distributed throughout South King County. IV. TERMS OF CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR ' According to the by-laws, the Chair is a two year term; Linda was elected in April 2011. The Vice-Chair is a one year term and is selected at the January meeting each ' year. Rob has expressed interest in continuing to serve as the Vice-Chair. Adria, � Linda, and Margie farmed a Nominating Committee and will complete the process of nominating a Vice-Chair. � V. RECOGNITION OF ROLF The Committee will mal<e a donation for a summer camp scholarship at the Renton ' Community Center. CAPACITY BUILDING WRAP-UP AND RECOMMENDATIONS i The four worl<shops held this year were highly rated. Nathan Phillips, Capacity ; Building Consultant, also provided 36 hours of direct assistance to agencies, and will provide another 17 hours before the end of the year. A sub-committee of Linda, Adria and Dianne recammend that five thousand dollars ($5,000} be set aside again in 2012 to provide professional services to improve the capacity of non-profit agencies serving Renton residents. Since this is an application year, it is lil<ely ; serviees will be targeted to praviding technical assistance with applications, It was ; moved by Charlie to accept the motion as presented for the dollar amount {$5,000) and organization (South King Council of Human Services SKCHS). A vote was held ; and motion passed. ' VII. HSAC VACANCIES-STATUS OF APPLICAI'IONS A total of five applications have been received. All applicants were invited to attend ; the December meeting. The Nominating Committee will conduct interviews and forward recommendations to Mayor Law, who will make the final appointment. The desire is to have the new member at the January meeting. VII1. BREIFING ON STATE OF HUMAN SERVICES Karen is worl<ing on the regional State of Human Services Committee. Data specific ! to South I<ing County has been gathered on four main topics: food, housing, � healthcare, and education employment. This data will be used to educate people ' about what the cuts to Human Services mean to the community, and find new ways that organizations can work together to deliver services in the future. The Committee will meet again in lanuary to continue these discussions. � i IX. REVIEW OF HUMAN SERVICES ADVISORY COMMITTEE BY-LAWS AND JOB � DESCRIPTION � Linda read the missian statement aloud to the group. She said a review serves as a reminder to hald each other accountable to follow the by-laws and stay an course � to fulfill the mission statement.
