• The state's Office of Financial Management has released official population totals.
Renton's population is now 104,100, an increase of 1,400 from 2017. Renton ranks
as the state's eighth largest city and the fourth largest city in King County.
• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is planning to test one of several cleanup
options at the Quendall site around July 20th. The agency will test the Self -
Sustaining Treatment for Active Remediation, or STAR, technology. STAR uses an
underground thermal process that burns creosote contamination out of the soil.
The test will determine the effectiveness of the STAR option prior to the release of
the proposed cleanup plan for public review and comment. The EPA has told city
staff that they have informed property owners around the Quendall site about the
test. Questions about the test can directed to Kathryn Cerise of the EPA at 206-553-
