GENERAL NOTES: I I
Rockery construction is a craft and depends largely on the I I
skill and experience of the builder. Arockery is a protective
system whigfl helps retard the weathering and erosion Fence 18" (Min
Process on an exposed soil lace- While by its nature (mass, (BY Others)
size, and shape of rocks) it wdll provide some degree of
retention, it is not a designed or engineered system in the
sense a reinforced concrete retainirlg wall would be considered
designed orengineered, The degree of retention achieved is
dependent on the size of the rock used; that is, the mass
and the height or the wall being con stmded, Larger rocks
typically are indicative of competent rockeries.
Rockeries should be considered maintenance Items that will
require periodic Inspection and repair. They should be located
so that they can be reached by a contractor if repairs become
neCr4ssary.
CONSTRUCTION NOTES-
1. Maximum Inclination of the slopes above and behind
rockeries shall be 21HAV (Horizontal: Vertical),
2. Minimum thickness of unit drainage fill behind rockery
face shell be 18 inches.
3. Minimum embedment into undisturbed native soil shall
be 12 inches.
4- Maximum rockery height H = 10 feet -
Rockery shall be constructed in accordance with
Associated Rockery Contractors (ARC} guidelines.
The Geotechnical Engineer shall observe rockery
construction or. a periodic or full-time basis as appropriate.
Unless otherwise specified in writing by the rockery
"designers", all rocks placed in the lower two-thirds of the
wall should be 5 to 6 man rock. 4.000 lbs. or larger. Rocks
placed above this level should gradually decrease In
size with Increasing wall height using 3 to 4 man rock,
700 to 4,00 lbs.
The long dimension of the rocks should extend back
towards the cut face to provide maximum stability.
Rocks should be placed to avoid continuous joint planes in
vertical or lateral directions- Fach nick should bear on two
or more racks below it, with good flat -to -flat. contact.
All Trickeries over 4 feet in height should be constructed on
basis of wall mass, irrespective of face square footage.
