Contract 7624
Day Wednesday Date 9/2/09
Benson Road
Merlino crew used a dozer, track hoe and earth mover to excavate native material from
the east side of the roadway . An earth mover hauled this material across the roadway
and used it for backfill on the west side of the road. (Above Talbot Hill Rd.) Traffic
control was set-up north and south bound on Benson Road. Two flaggers stopped traffic
for four or five minutes in order for the earth mover to dump soil. In the afternoon, this
material was transported to the conveyor belt and traffic control was removed from
Benson Road.
WSDOT Exchange Property
City Transfer and Merlino crew on site to continue to place native soil from the Rolling
Hills excavation. This material was transferred via conveyor belt where a track hoe
loaded two earth movers for placement. Laborers cut and placed geogrid for the first lift
at Elev. 175 ft. A track hoe and small dozer placed 1 ft. of common borrow on top of
geogrid between Sta. 11+75 to 13+00. Care was taken not to track the equipment on the
geogrid. A roller was on site for compaction. The drainage ditch at the bottom of this
slope has already been cut.
Met Dan Quehl, Mayes Testing, site inspector. We discussed how the contractor was
proceeding with the slope reinforcement. Dan said his compaction tests have passed.
Ken Viren has tested compaction, daily. Looked at cross section plan of slope
reinforcement with Dan and Matt, Merlino foreman. Slope was being built per plan.
A track hoe placed quarry spalls along the roadway shoulder NB/I-405 and the bottom of
the slope. A Baker Tank arrived on site.
