Today' s activities listed for CDB at the Defoor site:
Attended the CDB morning meeting.
Observation and soil density testing on common borrow placed over SF-55 and SF-20 Geogrid Reinforcing from
stations 11+75 to 15+95.
Performed Soil density testing at above locations as per T310 using a nuclear density gauge model 3440 and a
standard proctor value of 116.9 @ 12.8% optimum moisture. The tests met 95% required compaction on fill and
Contractor was informed of test results. See attached Field Density Report for results and locations.
This common borrow used was being transported by a conveyor belt from the Rolling Hills south of Thunder Creek.
The samples obtained from these nuclear density tests were done per Method 1 SOP 615 and the percent
compaction determined per SOP 615
While the Geogrid Reinforcing was being installed from stations 11+75 to 15+95 prior to fill the following was
verified:
1. Checked to assure that the proper type of Geogrid reinforcing was being used and was not damaged.
2. Checked to assure the minimum embedment depth was attained according to approved plans&specs
3. Checked that Geogrid was attached together subcontractor using twist ties placing with 1' to2' spacing and
overlapping Geogrid 2to6 inches.
4. A total of 58 rolls of SF-55 and 3 rolls of SF-20 Geogrid Reinforcing was layed today.
5. That fill being placed did not exceed 1' subcontractor using a laser to check elevations on each lift.
6. That Geogrid was laying flat and not bundled up prior to fill.
Spoke with Kevin Wicklund the foreman with CTI and approximately 4,725 cubic yards of material was placed
today.
Was visited by Bob Pyle the compliance inspector with WSDOT, Mark Thompson Geotech with CDB, Todd
Valentine Geotech with CDB,Amy Arnold Geotech with CDB, and Roch Player Geotech with CDB to see how the
job was progressing, the effect the rain had on the common borrow , and if any more of the competent rock was
encountered in the existing subgrade.
Ken Viren the WSDOT QV performed Soil Density test with the Nuclear Density gauge model 3430 and obtained a
samples per SOP 615 and no correction was required for the maximum dry density.
Observed the two 350P offroad dump trucks driving over the compacted material throughout the day with no
deflection or yielding in the material.
Observed the continuation for the cut of the compacted fill at the 2:1 slope and ditchline from stations 10+00 to
11+00.
The CTI subcontractor only placed a total of 3 1' lifts of fill today so the 4' hold point was not reached yet.
