Project Description

The project is defined by a temporary mobile hydrogen fueling station with approximately 150
kg of onsite storage (equivalent in energy to 150 gallons of gasoline), to fuel Class 8 Fuel Cell
Drayage Truck with approximately 30 kg of hydrogen at the Kenworth R&D Center.
The station will consist of a single mobile fueling dispenser and 150 kg of gaseous storage on
board (the “HF150 Fueler”) at a maximum settled pressure of 6,600 psig. The total area
occupied by this equipment, including setbacks specified by NFPA2, is approximately 40 feet by
25 feet. Utilization of fuel will depend on how long it will take Kenworth to manufacture 9
Hybrid hydrogen fueled class 8 trucks and test them.
The fueler will feature K-rail barriers to safely separate it from surrounding traffic and will meet
all setback requirements specified by NFPA 2. The fueler is designed with numerous safety
features and complies with all code requirements stipulated in NFPA2. Access to the equipment
will be controlled by Kenworth.
There will be no construction work required or trenching to site the fueler, since it is a stand-
alone fueling system. The only utility necessary to operate the station is a 120V electrical
service, which is available at the proposed site. The electric power is needed for operating the
telematics system that communicates station status and remaining fuel supply.
Project sponsors – Toyota, Kenworth, the Port of Los Angeles and the California Air Resources
Board (CARB)
Toyota and Kenworth, in coordination with the fueling station provider, Air Products and
Chemical, will utilized trained staff and offer re-training to Renton first responders prior to
station startup.
The fueler will be removed following the conclusion of the fuel cell truck acceptance period,
and the site will be restored to its original use for parking.
