HomeMy WebLinkAboutPresentation - Racer Talking Points Racer Presentation Talking Points 8/7/17 Issue • Highly organized group of racers with internal communications • Not uncommon to have hundreds of vehicles, sometimes 400+ • Group and sub groups loiter, drive to 1 of 5 tracks, set up, race for 10 or 15 minutes with scouts then move along to the next track.Tracks are in Renton, Kent,Auburn,Tukwila and West Seattle • Excessive noise from hundreds of cars moving from track to track. 167 is popular because Renton/Kent is a hub for loitering Along 43RD. Cars utilize the freeway to return from West Seattle,then again when going to Auburn. Most noise is generated when they are moving in small, medium or large groups • Increased calls for service • Other associated reckless&dangerous behavior � Other nuisance behavior(Trespass, Mal Misch, Littering) Difference between then and now • Excessive noise exposure (more obnoxious moving location to location) • Generates more associated criminal activity(robbery/theft) • More brazen than in the past Range of Police Response • Patrol responds to calls for service • Patrol officers proactively patrol areas of racing(very spotty and limited) • Dedicated emphasis officers on overtime � Multi Agency Task Force emphasis Strategies • High visibility, area denial • Criminal arrests and Traffic Enforcement • Saturation Patrols moving racers outside of Renton Plan for Future • Dedicated officers on overtime (subject to staffing and availability) • Racer Task Force surge patrols • Partner with National Insurance Crime Bureau • Partner with Prosecutors of Valley Cities to discuss SOAR and feasibility of additional ordinances • Consistent coordinated effort between agencies to share resources • Reduce likelihood of serious collisions • Reduce and deter street racing and other nuisance complaints within Renton and other partnering agencies
