Soft Surface Material.
Engineered wood fiber shall be a mix of random -sized Western Red Cedar wood partides that have been ground and
screened specifically for use as a playground safely surface. Material shall be free from bark, dirt, leaves, brother
contaminants, with interlocking fibers that make a matrix capable of supporting wheelchairs, and other assistive devices.
Hardwood material will not be considered, due to the susceptibility to decay.
A. Manufacturer shall provide impact test results in accordance with current ASTM F1292 Standard Specification for
Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Underand Around Playground Equipment
B. Safely surfacing product must have current IPEMA (International Playground Equipment Manufacturer's
Association) testing and certification to be considered in compliance with ASTM F1292 standards.
C. Manufacturer must provide proof of ADA accessibility in accordance with ASTM F1951 Standard Specification for
Determination ofAccessibilify of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment.
D. Manufacturer must provide proof of compliance with ASTM F2075- Standard for Engineered Wood Fiber for
Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment.
E. Minimum manufacturers performance warrantee: 10 years
Play Equipment.
Provide equipment as specified. Confirm availability, current configuration and safety zone layout prior to construction.
Notify Owner if current configuration and /or safety zones have changed, and coordinate with Owner /Landscape Architect
to adjust play area accordingly, to maintain proper safety zones.
A. Equipment shall comply with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) Public Playground Safety
Handbook, and ASTM F1487, latest edition. Alternate products proposed must have written IPEMA certification for
every component to be considered compliant with ASTM.
B. Provide Certificate of manufacturer's product liability insurance for a minimum of $10 million coverage.
C. Provide copy of manufacturers standard warr anty.
D. Provide plan view of play structure (with safety zones shown), and individual component specifications.
3. INSTALLATION:
Soft Surface Material.
A. Provide and install approximately 30% additional material to allow for compaction; depth after 30 day compaction
period shall be 12" minimum.
B. Install (1) layer of polyester geolextile beneath wood fiber surfacing, overlapping edges at least 4".
C. Provide and install (1 ) rubber wear mat, (minimum size 1 %" thick by 36" square) under
each swing seat or slide exit, installed an lop of geotexlile.
D. Install safety surfacing system in accordance with manufacturers standard installation
instructions.
E. Installer to provide installation instructions, maintenance instructions, and warrantee information to owner, or
owners representative for permanent record keeping.
Pla y Equipment.
E ui ment.
A. Install equipment according to manufacturers printed installation instructions and specifications. All concrete
footings are to be below Soft Surface Material. If equipment is ever a concrete vault, coordinate with Owner,
General Contractor, and Vault Lid designer regarding bolt connections to vault lid. Coordinate with vault designer
regarding possibility that void areas in vault lid planks under bolts might need to be filled with concrete to provide
property depth for bolts.
B. Upright posts are to be installed plumb with decks. Decks and accessories to be level. All hardware is to be tight
and secure.
C. Installation shall be performed by a contractor with at least 3 years experience installing playground equipment,
and shall be certified by Equipment Manufacturer to install specified playground equipment.

schedule shall be based on the manufacture's recommendations and the intensity of the use of the play area. At a
minimum the play area shall be inspected and maintained quarterly.
C. Maintenance shall comply with a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) Public Playground Safety
Handbook and ASTM F1487.
D. Maintenance shall include, but is not limited to the following;
1. Add soft surface material to maintain fail safety compliance replace when necessary.
2. Inspect and repair equipment, including tightening bolts, replace damaged or missing pieces, lubricating moving
parts, and maintain surfacing of all equipment. Replace equipment at the end of its life span.
3. Remove from play equipment and from soft surface material any items that would pose a hazard.
4. Keep a log of all installation, inspection, maintenance and repair operations.
