HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 3245 CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO. 3245 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING ADOPTION BY THE STATE LEGISLATURE OF AN INCREASE IN THE STATE GASOLINE TAX. WHEREAS, the City of Renton has proposals for major developments within the City, including the Port Quendall Project and the Boeing Longacres expansion; and WHEREAS, these proposed developments will require substantial transportation capacity upon interstate, state and local highways and streets; and WHEREAS, the City of Renton has passing through it I-405, SR 167, SR 169 and SR 900, all of which suffer from capacity problems; and WHEREAS, the City of Renton' s surface streets are significantly impacted by traffic diverted from the overcrowded interstate and state highways; and . WHEREAS, transportation is. a vital public works element that impacts every citizen in every part of the state; and WHEREAS, the amount of revenue available to both state and local agencies is not sufficient to meet the demands for congestion relief, safety enhancements, system maintenance, transit improvements and improvements to bicycle and pedestrian facilities; and 1 RESOLUTION NO. 3245 WHEREAS, adequate transportation funding is fundamental for the continued economic prosperity of all regions in the state of Washington; and WHEREAS, the state' s street and highways are constructed and maintained with revenue from the state' s fuel tax, and both state and local jurisdictions rely heavily upon_proceeds from the state' s fuel tax to perform maintenance and improvements tothe local street systems; and WHEREAS, the primary funding power of the fuel tax is declining due to inflation and the increasing economy of motor vehicles; NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS : SECTION I. The above recitals are found to be true and correct in all respects. SECTION II. The preference of the City Council of the City of Renton is to raise the necessary funds for transportation improvements by a gasoline tax increase. SECTION III. The City Council of the City of Renton would support a legislative effort to enact a gas tax increase sufficient to ensure that adequate funding is available to the state and local agencies to meet their currently identified transportation needs. 2 RESOLUTION NO. 3245 SECTION IV. The City Council of the City of Renton would prefer that any increase in the fuel tax be utilized exclusively for highway and street improvements.
