RESOLUTION NO. 1961
WHEREAS the President of the United States has heretofore
proposed certain drastic cuts and changes in the presently existing
programs affecting senior citizens across the country, including
proposed reduction and attrition in the nutrition program, the cost
of food stamps and a proposed limitation of the five percent (5%)
increase in the present Social Security benefits , and
WHEREAS any such proposals , if adopted into law, would result
in serious , irreparable harm to, our senior citizens , including
deterioration in their already limited standard of living and diminution
of health care, and
WHEREAS any such proposal by the President of the United States
would not be in the best interest of such senior citizens and the
country as a whole , NOW THEREFORE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS :
SECTION I : The above findings and recitals are hereby found
to be true and correct in all respects .
SECTION II : The City Council of the City of Renton hereby
goes on record as being unalterably opposed to
a) any cuts - and diminution of services to the senior citizens of
our country , and in particular, is strenuously opposed to
b) any increase in the cost of food stamps ;
c) any freeze of the recommended increase and adjustment of
social security benefits , and
d) any deterioration or reduction in the present nutrition programs .
SECTION III : The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed
to certify copies of this Resolution and to forward same to , among
others , the duly elected Representatives and Senators from the State of
Washington and to furthermore forward copies hereof to the office of
Mayor Avery Garrett to be submitted to the NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES
CONGRESSIONAL-CITY CONFERENCE for its meeting in Washington, D. C.

SECTION IV : In addition thereto, the City Council hereby urges
all interested citizens of our community to communicate with their
duly elected representatives and all other interested persons urging
them to join in the protest against any such reductions in benefits
and services to our senior citizens .
