'��� ��R� WHEREAS Helmie Nelson has signaled her intention to retire
from the position of City Clerk from the City of Renton after 16 �
years in said office and such resignation will become effective
September 30 , 1972 , whether or not the Council accepts that
resignation, and ;�,
WHEREAS Helmie Nelson has distinguished herself as having
served more than 25 individual Councilmen _and four Mayors and
keeping all of them more or less happy in the disposition of her �
duties as one of the most efficient city clerks in the State of
Washington, and ,
WHE.REAS Helmie Nelson has suffered through more than 760 City
Council meetings which �iave been dull , exciting, controversial,
special , regular, short, and long, and Council action with double
and triple motions , and amendments , and motions to reconsider,� and
to suspend the rules , and to adjourn have confused her so much at
times that she has � lost track of inembers of her family and her son ' s
Heath-Techna stock, and these Council meetings have served as
birthdays and anniversary celebrations for her, ancl
Z�iEREAS more than 40 City employees have been directly under
her supervision during the years and more than 700 City employees i
• have called on her for different requests , and �
WHEREAS John E. Nelson has silently sat by while his wife has
taken the spotlight during all of these years wondering some nights � t.f
if Helmie would return home before reporting to work the next day, �
and has had to call vacations short in order to return to the city
so Helmie could be at her regular Monday night Council meeting and �
,'' r has had to celebrate his own birthday alone at home while Helmie
was at a Council meeting, or celebrate his half of a wedding � ''
anniversary while Helmie was at a meeting, NO�a THEREFORE

THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON IS HEREBY
RESOLVED to reluctantly, but with great thanks from all former and
present Councilmen accept the resignation of Helmie Nelson as City I
Clerk and further does hereby proclaim the remainder of 1972 as
"John E . Nelson Year" and calls upon Helmie Nelson to. reacquaint
herself with her husband, John, her daughter, Virginia, and son,
Larry , and her four grandchildren, and extends sincere congratula-
tions on her retirement and does so with the most sincere best
wishes for a happy , healthful , and enjoyable future .
PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this��day of September, 1972 .
