PRIOR TO SETTING ANY BLOCKS OR PLACING ANY ROCK FOR THE WALL FOUNDATION, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL DIG ONE TEST PIT IN EACH THIRD OF THE WALL LENGTH FOR INSPECTION BY THE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE 48 HOURS NOTICE TO THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO THE DESIRED INSPECTION TIME. THE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER WILL PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS FOR IDENTIFYING POOR MATERIAL THAT MUST BE OVER -EXCAVATED. 2. BLOCK UNITS SHALL BE KEYSTONE COMPAC UNITS OR APPROVED EQUAL. 3. SHEAR CONNECTORS SHALL BE 1/2 -INCH DIAMETER THERMOSET ISOPTHALIC POLYESTER RESIN-PULTRUDED FIBERGLASS REINFORCEMENT RODS OR EQUIVALENT TO PROVIDE CONNECTION BETWEEN VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY ADJACENT UNITS WITH THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS: A. FLEXURAL STRENGTH IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM D4476:128,000 PSI MIN. B. SHORT BEAM SHEAR IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM D4475:6,400 PSI MIN. SHEAR CONNECTORS SHALL BE CAPABLE OF HOLDING THE GEOGRID IN THE PROPER DESIGN POSITION DURING GRID PRE -TENSIONING AND BACKFILLING. 4. CONSTRUCTION EXCAVATION AND WALL PLACEMENT SHALL BE COMPLETED TO MAINTAIN SLOPE STABILITY PARTICULARLY DURING PRECIPITATION EVENTS. CONSTRUCTION SLOPE STABILITY SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR. 5. NATIVE SUBGRADE SHALL BE COMPACTED TO FIRM AND UNYIELDING CONDITION AND SHALL BE PROOF ROLLED BY A BACKHOE OR AN EXCAVATOR -MOUNTED PLATE COMPACTOR (OR APPROVED EQUAL) IN PRESENCE OF THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO PLACING LEVELING PAD ROCK (TYP) 6. LOCATIONS WHERE THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL EXPOSES EXISTING LOOSE/SOFT ORGANIC -RICH ALLUVIUM, AND WHERE THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL IS WITHIN 2 FEET OF THIS MATERIAL, A 2 -FOOT OVER -EXCAVATION AND REPLACEMENT WITH PERMEABLE BALLAST (WSDOT STD. SPEC. 9-03.9(2)) IS REQUIRED. A SHALLOWER PAD (MIN. THICKNESS 6") MAY BE USED WITH THE ENGINEER'S APPROVAL. OVER -EXCAVATION BELOW THE BOTTOM OF THE 6 LEVELING PAD SHALL BE PAID UNDER BID ITEM "REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF UNSUITABLE FOUNDATION MATERIAL." A CRUSHED SURFACING BASE COURSE (CSBC, WSDOT STD. SPEC. 9-03.9(3)) LEVELING PAD MAY REPLACE THE TOP 3 INCHES OF PERMEABLE BALLAST IN OVER -EXCAVATION AREAS IF DESIRED. 7. ALL NATIVE AND IMPORTED FILL MATERIAL SHALL BE COMPACTED TO FIRM AND UNYIELDING CONDITION. FOUNDATION SOILS AND ROCK SHALL BE COMPACTED TO 95% MODIFIED PROCTOR. COMPACTABLE NATIVE MATERIAL MAY BE USED FOR WALL BACKFILL WITH ENGINEER'S APPROVAL. 8. SURFACE TREATMENTS IN DISTURBED AREAS TO BE FURNISHED PER CIVIL PLANS.
