necessity to the military and civil defense of the Paczfic Northw�st; and I

T�hiEREASs a second a11-taeather crossing of the Cascade Mountaans has

been proven conclusively to be of vi.tal necessity to -�he future growth and weLt-
being of the economy of the State of Washington; and
TnHERI��A.S� events of recent months in the field of inte�ational
relations have emphasa.zed the amperative need to prov.i.de broad routes of evacu-
ation between the urban centers of Puget Sound and eastern Washington in the
event of nucleax r�raxfare; and
i�;REAS, only one dependable all-weather trans-Cascade highway now
exists between eastern and western Washington for use by both military and.
civilian personnel and equipment; �
NOW, fifiEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the
City of Renton that we respectfully reques�t that every possible effort and action
be taken to assure that these critical needs be alleva..ated forthwith by the
earliest possible s-tart on and campletion of the Naches Pass Z�usznel and its
approachese
