AN ORDINANCE OF THE eITY OF RENTON, WASKINGTON,
RELA'TING TO THE INSTALT�ATION AND MAIN`TENANCE OF
SMOKE DETECTORS IN OCCUPANCIES THAT ARE RENTED,
LEASED QR LET

THE CITY CQUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON DO
� ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION Z : 5moke de�tectors shall be in�talled and maintained
in accordance with the pravisions of thia Qrdinance in the �ollowing
i occupancies that are rented , lease�? or let to a person or persons .
A. �uest rooms and djaell�ngs in ha-tels , mo-te:�s ,
apar�ments and car�dominiums and similar or a�her
uses a� defined in Group, R, Divi.sion l, Occupancies
of the Uni�orm Building Code, 1976 Editian , as amended,
I� B . Dwelling units in duplexes, single family dwellings �
� and lodging houses or o-�her u�e� as more particularly
defined in Group R, Division 3 , Occiapancies , o� �he
Uni�arm Building Code, 1976 Edition, as amended.
C. Mobi2e home dwelling unit�.
SECTION II: Smoke detectars installed- in accordance with. �
the provisians of this Ordinance shall be o� a type confarming to �

Uniform Building Code s-tandard 43-6 ar of a type approved by nationally i
recognized �esting labora�tory.
SECTIQ.N III: The method of ins�allation of smake de-�ectors �
� shall be in accordance with the pravisions of the 1976 Edition of
I� the Uni�orm Buil.ding Code, as amended, Section 1310 for hotels , i
motels, apartz�tent� and can.dominiums and Section 14I3 for duplexes , �
I
I single family dwellings, ladging hauses and mabile homes .
I� A. The Build�ng owner or agen� �hall be responsible �or �
i the in�tallation. I
� B. The Build�g owner ar agen� Shall pravide or post
� wi�hin each guest roam or dwelling u.nit, written
� operating i�struc-�ion� and maintanance ins�r�ctionS
�or the smoke detec�or in�talled therein.
SECTION IV: Maintenance o� smoke detectors shall be the
responsi.bility of the tenant who sha11 maintain the device in
accardance wi�h the instructians a� the znanufacturer. When an
occupancy is vacated, the building owner or agent shall insure that

smoke detectors are operational prior to re-occupancy.
SECTION V: Smoke detectors required by this Ordinance
shall be installed in all occupancies listed in Section I by not �
later than 18 months after the adoption of this Ordinance . I
SECTION VI: Any person violating any provision of this
Ordinance shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction
thereof, be punished by a fine of not more than three_-hundred
dollars ($300. 00) or by imprisonment for not more than ninety ( 90)
days , or by both such fine and imprisonment.
SECTION VII: This Ordinance shall be effective upon its
passage, approval and five ( 5) days after its publication.
