6-181 OF TITLE VI (POLICE REGULATIONS) OF ORDIN-
ANCE No. 1628 E[vTTITLED "CODE OF GENERAL ORDIANCES
OF THE CITY OF RENTON" RELATING TO SHOPLIFTIM
SECTION I: There is hereby established a new section to be known as
Section 6-181 of TITLE VI (Police Regulations) to read as follows.
SECTION 6-181:
(a) Any person who willfully takes possession of any goods, wares or
merchandise of a value of less than 075.00 offered for sale by any whole-
sale or retail store or other business establishment without the consent of
the seller, with the intention of converting such goods, mares or merdhandise
to his own use without having paid the purchase price therefor, is guilty,
of the misdemeanor of shoplifting*
(b) Any peace officer may, upon a charge being made and without a
warrant, arrest any person whom he has reasonable cause to believe has comae
mitted'or attempted to commit the crime of shoplifting. For the purpose of
this Ordinance "Peace Officer" means a duly appointed law enforcement officer
of the City of Renton.
(c) Reasonable cause shall be a defense to a civil or criminal action
brought for false arrest, false imprisonment or wrongful detention against
a peace officer, by a person suspected of shoplifting.
(d) Any person violating any provision of this Ordinance shall be guilty
of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof, shall be fined any sum not ex-
ceeding $100.00 or confined in the City jail for not more than thirty (30)
days or both such fine and imprisonment.
SECTION II: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage, approval and legal publication.
