ADVISORY COMMISSION ON DIVERSITY

CALL TO ORDER: Sandel Demastus, Chair,called the meeting to order at 6:�40�.m.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Antonio Cube made a motion to approve the November 12, �008,
agenda as written. Second by Vern Nichols. 1Vlotion carried.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Antonio Cube made a motion to approve the October 8,200�,
minutes as written. Second by Lari White. Motion carried.
READING OF ORDINANCE#5155: Vern riichols read Ordinance#�5155. Vern discussed
how to help the public understand the purpo�e of the Advisory Commission on Diversity.
Several commissioners stated that the February 2008 Retreat gave purpose to what is exp�cted of
the Commission. It was also clarified that those with discrimination or diversity issues should
contact the Washington State Human Rights Commission or the King County Civil Rights
Commission.
COMMITTEE PROGRESS REPORTS: None.
OLD BUSINE�S: In response to Antonio Cube's request on the placerr�ent of handicap
placards, according to the American Disabilities Act,placards must be hung from the�ear view
mirror and not merely placed on the dashboard. If placed on the dashboard,violators may be
ticketed.
Serena Aquino,Youth Commissioner for the Advisory Commission on Dive�sity, turned�1
years of age in i�iovember. This is the maximum age for a youth commissioner,however her
term is in effact until December 31,2009. She will continue to ser�e until her term expires.

There were 13 applicants for the position vacated by Audrey Godwin. In order for the
Commissioners to learn more about the prospective candidates, staff agreed to send each of them
a letter with interview questions. In December, the Commissioners will evaluate the applications
and responses to determine how many will be interviewed. Those not selected will be notified
by mail.
In February or March, 2009, the Commissioners would like to host a gathering for South King
County Diversity Commissions (Kent, Federal Way, and Tukwila). Commissioners agreed to
plan,make arrangements, and give input on agenda items.
NEW BUSINESS/OTHER COMMUNICATIONS: In cooperation with AARP, Deborah
Needham, Renton Emergency Management Director, will be giving a presentation at the Renton
Senior Activity Center on November 21, 2008,beginning at 1:00 p.m., to engage citizens in
disaster preparedness and response efforts. The City is building a strong volunteer emergency
worker program and will recruit and train volunteers through a number of free classes at Renton
Technical College.
The Renton Historical Society&Museum,located at 235 Mill Avenue South, will feature Black
History Stories on February 14 and February 28 beginning at 11:00 a.m. On February 14, the
story will feature the life of Harriet Tubman, the most renowned conductor of the Underground
Railroad. February 28 will feature a story on Civil Rights—A History of Us-that will include
pivotal events in Black History including the life of Rosa Parks.
The terms for Sandel DeMastus,Antonio Cube, Vern Nichols, and Lari White expire on
December 31, 2008. All four Commissioners would like to continue serving. Jerry Rerecich
will notify the Mayor's office to extend their terms through December 31, 2010.
ADJOURNMENT: Antonio Cube made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:�0 p.m. Second
by Vern Nichols. Meeting adjourned.
