CITY OF RENTON vwr•� MINUTES ADVISORY COMMISSION ON DIVERSITY May 13, 20�9 � CiTY OF RENTON r J U N 1 1 2009 Commissioners: Kathleen Booher CITY CLERK S OFFICE Antonio Cube Serena Aquino Barbara Clark-Elliott Raymond Lamb Vern Nichols Absent: Sandel Demastus Charles Thomas Lari White Staff: Gloria Gamba Jerry Rerecich CALL TO ORDER: Vern Nichols, Vice Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Barbara Clark-Elliott made a motion to approve the ,,�, May 13, 2009, agenda as written. Second by Serena Aquino. Motion carried. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Antonio Cube made a motion to approve the April 8, 2009, minutes as written. Second by Kathleen Booher. Motion carried. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: None. NEW BUSINESS: The Commissioners shared their experiences/encounters with diversity issues during March: _ ➢ B_arbara Clark-Elliott participated in a day of silence for Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays. ➢ There was a discussion on the Swine Flu epidemic. Kathleen Booher mentioned that any Boeing employee having flu-like symptoms, was mandated to stay home for seven days. Kathleen Booher, showed a very interesting DVD, "OUCH! That Stereo-Type Hurts". Boeing uses this tool for employee training, in multi-cultural events, workshops, etc. It was suggested it would be educational for the upcoming Renton-Tukwila-Federal Way Combined Workshop tentatively scheduled for September. � O:�Boards and Commissions�Diversiry Committee�Advisory Commissioo on DiversityVvlAY 09 MINUTES(3).doc � � Advisory Commission on Diversity May 13,2009 Page 2 � Packets containing a draft of the workshop agenda, mission statements, by-laws, and ordinances for all three cities were distributed to the Commissioners for their review and comments. OLD BUSINESS: Jerry Rerecich discussed the previous conference calls with the three cities. Another conference call is scheduled for May 19 at 4:30 p.m. DeBorah Little from Federal Way has offered to facilitate the workshop without charge. Jerry also explained that Auburn has a Multi-Cultural Round Table group appointed by their Mayor. In the past, the Commissioners shared their ideas on redesigning the Advisory Commission on Diversity brochure. It was decided to update the brochure with the names of the new Commissioners,change the date, and leave the mission statement as is. Vern Nichols will be emailing all Commissioners and staff,his first article on, "Who's Your Neighbor" prior to the June meeting. OTHER: It was noted that Charles Thomas has now missed three consecutive meetings— March, April, and May. Jerry Rerecich will phone Sandel Demastus, Chair, and ask her to contact Charles Thomas to determine if he is still interested in serving on the Commission. She will report back at the June meeting. � Kathleen Booher also distributed several informative and educational flyers on celebrating diversity, upcoming events and presentations, a sample of a Diversity Communique, a list of Renton Resources on Diversity, as well as a very detailed banner on the History of Women. It was suggested that Liz Stewart, City of Renton Museum Supervisor, review the banner for accuracy. Kathlee Booher provided the Commissioners with a quiz honoring National Disability Employment Awareness Month. A prize will be awarded to the person who has the most correct answers. All members are to complete the quiz and bring it to the June meeting. (For those not in attendance, all of the above information will be mailed to them.)
