Chief Daniels presented a suggestion to the Commission to allow a onetime exception to the eligibility of
Captains for testing for the position of Battalion Chief. The current eligibility list for Bat Chief has one
candidate and there will be a need in the near future to hire one possibly two more Bat Chief. The
proposal is to allow Captains who would be off probation as a Captain to test for Bat Chief. Currently
A. the Captain would have to be in the position for at least 2 years before they could test. The Commission
asked a few clarification questions. It was determined that the Commission would not be opposed to the
idea,therefore nezt month a promotional recruitment for Bat Chiefs would be presented to the
Commission with the one-time eligibility exception for Captains. No Action was required for the
Commission at this time.

Public Safety Testing conducts the initial physical and written tests, and forwards those who pass the
physical agility exam and have a passing score of 75%or more on the written test to the City for further
testing. This score has a 30%weight of the final score. The City received test scores from 19 candidates
for the month of June. The top 13 candidates were invited to participate in the oral board. Only those
candidates who pass with an 80%or higher oral board score would be placed on the eligibility list. This
score has a 70%weight of the final score.

Must be 21 years of age by the date of the written examination;
Must be a U.S. citizen;
Must be able to read and write the English language;
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent;
Must be able to meet miniinum medical standards;
Must be able to pass a background investigation,psychological evaluation, drug screen,and polygraph
examination prior to hire;
Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license without record of suspension or revocation of
driving privileges in this or any other state.

We received the candidates deemed qualified for further testing by Public Safety Testing during June
2008 and invited the top 13 candidates that were not invited from the current and previous months. We
held the Oral Board Examinations on July 17, 2008. The Oral Board consisted of 15 questions and five
dimensions, each rated at 5 points maximum for a total possible score of 100 points.

The Renton Police Department had received a few new applications for consideration. Three candidates were
interviewed, on 6/26/08, 7/10/08,and 7/17/08. The written test is a pass/fail test. Those who pass the written
test proceed to the Oral Board Interview. (Ever since 11/27/07 the Physical Fitness Agility Test-PFAT was not
administered as part of the Lateral Police Officer examination process.) The interview is weighted at 100%of
the fmal score,with a passing score of 70%.

Must have been a regular police officer for a minimum of one year out of the 36 months in order to be
considered. Must pass the written test, and oral board in order to be placed on the eligibility list.

Written exam involves candidates watching a video of a response to a 911 Domestic Violence call,and writing a
report with fmdings. The Written exam has a pass/fail rating. The oral board consists of a set of 15 structured
questions, and the rating of five dimensions, developed for an experienced police officer. Passing score for the
70%or greater is required to be placed on the eligibility list.
