explained how we began this process in late July by selecting Gyroscope as the
consultant to oversee the plan. We hope this plan will take us 15 years into the
future. Liz encouraged those present to share their thoughts and any ideas were
welcome. There was discussion detailing issues facing the organization. The team has
had extensive discussions with stakeholders and staff, held community interviews,
researched background and initiatives as well as reviewing prior studies. The Renton
History Museum is a center for important elements of local and regional history and
serves as a local resource and supports intergenerational learning.
Key strategies for the future such as: target new constituencies, share control
accumulate legacy, partner for what you need, flexible infrastructure and experiment
with history making were introduced.
The first strategy would be to experiment with history-making by utilizing artistic
interpretation, non-traditional perspective, unusual topics, new techniques, new
audiences and citizen history. It was identified we need to bring old and new
audiences together and broaden the funding base.
Liz noted the success of the traveling Smithsonian exhibit we hosted last year and how
we will investigate additional 'traveling' exhibits in the future. We also need to
encourage the younger visitors, the 3rd grade school tours don't come through any
longer. Liz said the staff will look at how to create more energy and tie into the
downtown as well as Veterans Memorial Park. Now the biggest challenge is funding
and the need to make changes to the building. Terry invited everyone to walk around
the building following adjournment of the meeting and enjoy the exhibits.
VI. ADJOURNMENT
Tim Searing made a motion seconded by Larry Reymann to adjourn the December
meeting. All were in favor, motion carried, the December 2009 meeting was
