APPROVAL OF MINUTES: PAT PEPPER MOTIONED TO APPROVE THE AUGUST 4 MINUTES. SECONDED BY DENISE ZULLIG. COMMISSIONERS CONCUR, MOTION CARRIED. PUBLIC ART PIECE OF THE MONTH is"We're all in this boat together" by Harold Balazs. Sculpture is based on an Indian canoe—there are a series of 12 around Washington State. T-shirt design is based on his sculpture in Spokane, Transcending the Bull. Balazs developed the process of enameling steel through his experience working with jewelry. Jerri Everett will do public art piece next month. CORRESPONDENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: Fred Lund distributed mail highlighting local art events. OLD BUSINESS: Local Arts Aqencv: No recent meetings ACTION ITEM LIST: Communications: No meeting Resource Development: • Denise Zullig put together a draft of their workplan (see packet)giving the status of their projects. Wesley Van Doren is working on grants and may need help due to his current workload. The 4Culture grant has been delayed; it now opens in October and is due in December. The status of the other two projects they are working on is in the workplan. Fred Lund asked if anyone knew what had happened at the 4 cow bridge, apparently there was graffiti. The local neighborhood association is aware of the problem. Once the bridge is open to traffic again it will help to reduce the amount of graffiti. Wesley Van Doren said if there was art at the location more people would pay attention to the area and graffiti would be less likely. Denise Zullig asked how much graffiti is in the city; Mike O'Halloran named some things he knew of but nothing out of the ordinary. Municipal Arts Commission Min�, � Page 2 of 2 September 1,2009 Partnershia Communitv: They have a field trip today to the Evergreen City Ballet Executive Committee: No updates. Master Plan: The Proposal Review Committee selected four firms and is interviewing three tomorrow and one next week. After the interviews, the committee will make a recommendation for who should be hired. Fred Lund felt that those selected really had a feel for the arts. Jennifer Davis Hayes can email copies of the RFP's if needed. Wesley Van Doren would like a copy of 4Culture and Lund Consulting. Renton River Davs: Review in October when Dalia Amin is present. Outstandinq proiects and proiects status • Carco Theatre Lobby Display: Chihuly piece was moved from Carco Theatre display case for security reasons to keep it safe. Uptown Glassworks will put something in the display; they will rotate various pieces for viewing. It would be good to find the originai certificate awarded with the Chihuly piece and display it at Carco Theatre. • Public Art Video: Will be ready in the next week. Site Specific Art: • Eduardo Mendon�a performed at last week's Farmers Market and it went very well. The Arts Commission grant and 4Culture's site specific grant($150), along with Farmers Market contribution, paid for his performance. Vincent Orduna will select something else for Clam Lights. Commission Budpet: • Grant recipients need to send invoices before the end of the year. • Remaining expenses include the possibility of two artist receptions. Details need to be worked out; Britt Peterson, Fred Lund and Vincent Orduna are working on it. Will be sending a Call for Artists soon. Doug Kyes has an interested artist, Kim Sweet and Mike O'Halloran recommended Gary Palmer. • Are there any small grant projects that Commission would like to support in a 2"d round of grants? According to the budget, there is $700 available. Pat Pepper suggested we should find ways to bring arts in the community. Jennifer Davis Hayes will draft a one page Call for Artists and send it to the committee for review. The Commission suggested 2 grants of$200 each and 2 grants at $150 each. Groups can apply, title will be: Make Art Happen in Renton and involve either children or the public. NEW BUSINESS: • Pat Pepper noted the recent Arts Unlimited event in Downtown Renton was wonderful. Jennifer Davis Hayes described changes in 2009. Grouping the artists around 3rd and Wells and also utilizing empty store fronts. A good turnout, good weather, really cool art resulted in a very successful event. • Wesley Van Doren is working on two grants: 1. Renton Community Foundation which is due in either November or April. 2. Sustained Supports due December. He has drafts and checklists and needs help for the Sustained Supports grant. An Adhoc committee was formed to work on the grants of Pat Pepper, Jennifer Davis Hayes and possibly Vincent Orduna. Denise Zullig is a�so willing to help if her schedule permits. • Barbara Michaels will be at next meeting to talk about SOCO Culture.
