They host film-making contests for students,a gala,open-Mike nights and various other events. A representative from the Washington State Arts Commission's Arts Education Research Initiative was there to discuss the report which is a "census"of what school districts are doing and provided recommendations for improving. It made Jennifer realize that working with school boards on their art education policies would be more successful than working with individual teachers whose legacy's leave when they move on. A self assessment can be done, there are grants available and we can work with this organization to improve art with our school district and allow it to be sustaining. Pat Pepper mentioned that Tahoma School District works to integrate the State Art requirements into the integrated curriculum to make sure art is included. Evelyn Reingold mentioned that the Art Docent program for SAM uses a similar plan. ACTION ITEM LIST: Communications: Committee has a project is in process and will report next time. They will print the posters for the Downtown parking garage display cases on the plotter and VJ Orduna will laminate—run a test with one poster to see if it will work. Resource Development: The 4 Cow project is still in the works. Everyone is invited to meet with South Renton Connections neighborhood group at 7 pm tonight. They will discuss options for the project and opportunities for grants. The Commission received a letter from McLendon Hardware supporting the 4 Cow project. A new 1%for Art opportunity is available on the Rainier Ave project. lennifer Davis Hayes, Pat Pepper and Denise Zullig met and reviewed the project. Design elements include trellis installed at S 3d and Rainier as well as a gateway welcome sign at Grady and Rainier. The 1%for Art contribution from this project is$23,517. Transportation requested the Arts Commission design something for under the trellis. Pat and Denise agreed that due to a small budget, the Gateway location might be a better option. There was a briefing of the Council's Community Services Committee to solicit input. The Council has asked for more information on the design elements from Transportation and will continue discussions on the 1%for Art program. Wesley Van Doren has volunteered to lead this project. Master Plan Update: Consultant has drafted the report and Jennifer Davis Hayes is finalizing and it will be distributed in a week or so. The key to a successful plan is a good implementation strategy. A meeting of key people will take place soon to plan how best this will happen. The consultant feels strongly that we need to hire someone who can focus on the plan implementation and grant monies would need to be found to make this happen. Please review the master plan when you receive it and give feedback. Master plan needs to be finalized to go before the Council's Committee of the Whole mid July. Renton River Davs: Britt McKenzie passed around the original artwork and the hand stamp for the booth purchased from A&M stamps. Fred Lund&Britt McKenzie are working on the posters for the A- boards, which are ready. Dalia reviewed the purchases for Renton River Days and asked if we still wanted to buy a pool to float the Origami boats. Commission decided against it as it could be a challenge with many kids around. She is working on having Key Club teen volunteers at the booth or possibly kids from the local high school. ' Municipal Arts Commission Minutes Page 3 of 3 lune 1,2010 Renton FilmFrenzv: Planning is still underway, please help distribute postcards to get the word out. Commission Budet: The grants are listed individually. $1,964 budgeted for projects so please look for opportunities within committees for projects. NEW BUSINE55: Commissioner Recruitment: Jennifer Davis Hayes passed around the results of the matrix of Commissioners skills that shows where the current committee is strong and where the gaps can be filled by a new Commissioner. When recruiting Commissioners,we will create questions to the application to help narrow down the selection prior to interview. Jennifer Davis Hayes asked Commissioners to think about what skills they would like to see in new Commissioner. The matrix shows that we may not be utilizing all the skills of our current Commissioners. Each time you add someone new you add a sphere of influence. The top ideas for questions include: 1. Marketing 2. Experience with fundraising&grant writing 3. Time commitment and willingness to participate 4. How they support the arts SPACE: Pat Pepper passed around SPACE:A Tool to Support Thoughtfulness—please read and use as a guide for our meetings. Britt McKenzie asked if we could have T-shirts for RRD's;suggested she get a quote and Commission will review the cost. Commissioners seemed willing to pay for the shirts themselves.
