MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Brown, Mary Burns-Haley, Marge Cochran-Reep, Eric Eastberg, Mary Ann
Ellingson, Mary lou Gilbert, Douglas Gregory, Ruby Griffin, Elaine Koehler, Emilie McCue, Fern Ziebell.
EXCUSED: Jane Goodwin, Edie-Mae Lawyer, Rose Warren.
ABSENT: Ben Cheney.
GUEST:Tim Williams, Recreation Director.
STAFF: Shawn Daly, Debbie Little,Terry Higashiyama.
President pro tem, Douglas Gregory, called the meeting to order at 10:05 A.M. Attendance was taken.
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as corrected.
Terry Higashiyama, Community Services Coordinator introduced Tim Williams,the new Recreation
Director. Terry explained this is his first day on the job. He arrived from Salt Lake City with his wife to
get settled before their children arrive. Tim said he grew up in southeast Idaho; received his degree from
Bringham Young University; worked in California in different capacities; recently worked in south Salt l,ake;
experience in difFerent program areas with my first Directorship in Salt Lake for eight years. Fern Ziebell
asked how many people applied for the job? Terry said they had 72 applicants;screened and scored down
to 18; and, interviewed eight. It was tough competition. The whole staff was involved and thought Tim
was the best candidate.
SENIOR SERVICES COORDINATOR'S REPORT—Shawn Daly
• Because of comments about Edie-Mae Shawn explained to Tim Williams who she is and her recent
severe accident. Debbie was asked to give an update on Edie-Mae which is she is out of the coma, a
miracle in itself; she walked down the hospital hall with Gene her husband. Absolutely incredible! We
can now be optimistic about her recovery. She received a card and was able to read every word.
� Carco Review is Thursday and Friday, May 13-14. We need ushers,ticket takers, etc. Thursday
performance is 1:00 pm, be at Carco Theatre by 12:00 noon; Friday volunteers need to be at Carco by
6:OOpm for the 7:00 pm performance. Debbie Little will be the MC for the show this year.
• Douglas Gregory asked Shawn when water will be in the fountain. I asked to have it open on May
first, I'm anticipating by the end of the week, it takes a few days to get it up and running.
• Mary Burns-Haley asked Shawn if we are going to be closed in September one or two weeks. We
wifl be closed two weeks;during the first week the building will be open from 9:00-1:00 PM to serve lunch
only.
TERRY HIGASHIYAMA—We haven't found anyone to represent our senior population on the Parks&
Recreation Open Space Plan. Marjorie Cochran-Reep volunteered.

RECREATION COORDINATOR- Debbie Little
� National Hi Day went really well; one person had 86 signatures.
• Portland On The Train was April28. We boarded the Amtrak train at the Tukwila Station; had lunch
at Huber's; rest of the day was spent tax free shopping, visiting Powell's Books...world's largest book-store;
Portland Art Museum and the Rose Garden,etc.
• Pool Tournament was Friday. Roy Garnet won and Pat came in second.
• Kentucky Derby Lunch was Friday,April 30.
• Reception for Tim Williams on Wednesday, May 5.
• Mother's Day Luxurious Luncheon is Friday, May 7. Mary Kay representatives will give hand
massages to all senior women.
• Hike to Cougar Mountain Wildland Park on Monday, May 17.
• Disaster Preparedness presentation for seniors on Tuesday, May 18.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS:
Mary Burns-Haley ... Mayor's volunteer dinner was very nice;there was enough food this year; lots of
happy people;great entertainment; I have a thank you card I will send to the Mayor from the committee.
Fern Ziebell said the dessert was very poor—apples were great, rest was still frozen in the center.
Emily McCue–asked when she should plant flowers outside the coffee bar area. It was suggested she
wait until the weather warms up.
