HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/01/2010 - Minutes , C���-`� .� C��r �.. � RENTON MAYOR'S SENIOR CITIZENS' ADVISORY COMMITTEE F��R 1, 2010 MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Brown, Mary Burns-Haley, Ben Cheney, Marge Cochran-Reep, Eric Eastberg, Mary Ann Ellingson, Mary Lou Gilbert, Douglas Gregory, Ruby Griffin, Elaine Koehler, Edie-Mae Lawyer, Emilie McCue, Rose Warren, Fern Ziebell. EXCUSED: 1ane Goodwin. STAFF: Shawn Daly,Terry Higashiyama. President, Edie-Mae Lawyer, called the meeting to order at 10:03 A.M. Attendance was taken. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read. TREASURER'S REPORT—Treasurer, Rose Warren reported the following: Bank Statement $12,902.45 Emergency Fund 203.25 Petty Cash 20.23 Forgotten Badge Fund 6.00 SENIOR SERVICES COORDINATOR'S REPORT—Shawn Daly • New Footcare provider, Karen Hopelton, starts on Wednesday, March 3. Price is lower...going • from $30 to$27 with the city receiving$2. Interest list taken of seniors wanting Karen's service, we had in two weeks 20 sign-up. • Knights of Columbus is having their Annual Senior Center breakfast on Saturday, March 13, from 8:00-11:00 PM. This is a free event with no ticket required. • February was Healthy Heart Month. On February 25 at the Senior Center the Fire Department did 90 blood pressures in the morning. • On Presidents' Day we were open with the Nutrition Site being closed. We had our own break fast, starting at 10:30 AM, serving approximately 200. • Drawing a lot more drop-in people coming down to see what we have to offer. The Coffee Bar Area is busting at the seams. • Mary Burns asked for an up-date on the project taking place by the outside fountain. Shawn said in the past several years the bricks became a safety issue;they were cracked and uneven. A lot of people asked where the money for repair came from. This is Capital Improvement money that was designated in the budget for a patio. Project started one and a half weeks ago with three nerve wrecking days listening to a jack hammer breaking up the bricks. Scheduled to be completed by Friday, March 6. Terry Higashiyama indicated the money that comes for our Capital funds is real estate excise tax. Projects for Capital projects are prioritized by safety liability issues, with safety at the top of the list. . � � �' COMMUNITY SERVICES ADMINISTRATOR—Terry Higashiyama • Doing a survey at Coulon Beach Park whether people feel we should allow dogs in the off season. The only two parks where dogs are not allowed are Coulon and Kennydale. Dogs are allowed on leashes on all the other trails and parks. • Director interviews take longer than one realizes. We had 72 applicants apply from all over the United States. Scored 18 and will interview eight (8); interview on March 12; Recreation staff, Mayor and Jay will have a social,with them, at the Renton Community Center in the afternoon taking the top 3-4 candidates out to show them the parks and programs. The social is to see how they react in a group and how they meet people. The finai name submitted to the Park Commissioners and they will recommend, by law,to the Mayor and the Council approves. • Moving out of the Liberty Park Building and returning to City Hall on March 12. Human Services will remain at the 200 Mill Building. Working with Renton Foundation to lease part of Liberty Park Building. • Sunday, April 11,from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM,the Seahawks 12K, 5K and Kids Run wil) start and finish at the Landing. After the run participants are invited to a Block Party, live music, a Kids Zone with free giant inflatable attractions, art show, giveaways and much more. • If you recall we had trouble with a person on the trail. The police got involved, he was arrested and has to go to court. We have not seen him sense his arrest.
